I have a problem with Movie Renamer. My folder structure is maybe what is causing it. Take a look at it.

This is my problem.

First, I ran movie renamer on d:\film\filmer which holds all my movies. It then scanned a few movies, but then it stopped responding when it got the gremlins 2: a new batch, which had a longer filename, and lies in a seperate folder of d:\film\filmer. I then ran movie renamer on gremlins only, and it renamed it fine. I then added a few movies, including A history of Violence before I ran the scan on d:\film\filmer and since A history of violence is starting with an 'A' it started the scan on this movie, but for some reason, stopped respodning again. I tried removing A history of Violence from the folder, but now it stops responding at 'Starting Scan'. What is wrong here?
I think it happened because of the folders in stead of files. I haven't tested it very much with folders per film instead of files. I've uploaded a testversion 1.4 beta 1. Could you give it a try to see if that works better for you ?

2 feature requests for the TV series renamer:
Some way to read the season number from the folder structure. It can read the series name from the folder structure, but not the season number (at least I haven't been able to get it to. I've been having to add the season number to each individual file to get it to work, even though all files are in folders organized by season number.).
Example: "Series\Season X\Y - Title.ext"

And the ability to choose which language it grabs the show episode titles from.
Example: http://www.episodeworld.com/show/Lupin_The_3rd/season=1/english vs. http://www.episodeworld.com/show/Lupin_The_3rd/season=1/japanese (anime default to Japanese titles on episodeworld.com for obvious reasons, but for those without unicode support enabled (and don't have japanese as their os language), it might prove messy.

HOLY CRAP!!! This tool is incredible! Wish I would have found it before renaming over a terabyte of TV shows. Thx for your great work with this.

I have a strange problem with this app, and i'm not sure if i'm using it right, so i figured i'd check.

I have all of my tv series files downloaded/extracted to d:\incoming\extracted . In there, for example, i have a file called "Rome.S02E05.HR.HDTV.XviD-BamHD.avi".

I'd like to rename this to just "S02E05 - Whateverthenameis.avi", and place that in the "/Television/Rome" directory of my TV Server.

So, in "Output Format", i have <series>\S<season2>E<episode2> - <title>, and n "path" i have D:\incoming\extracted.

I click "Scan Series", and it says "scan complete, but doesn't have any entries in the main box on the right hand side of the screen, and "selected episode" and "all episodes" is grayed out, so i can't seem to actually rename anything. If i right-click on the episode file and click "Rename Episode", nothing happens. If i right-click and click "search for new name", it says "there is no file that needs renaming".

Is there something i'm doing wrong? I'm using the latest version, and have .net framework 1.1 and 2.0 installed, as well as all the latest hotfixes.

One other, unrelated question: is there anyway to automate this program, like, have it scan the directory once ever 2 hours, rename the files, and automatically move them to my TV server? That would be my most requested feature right now. Thanks for all the help!

^ maybe there's a way and I just haven't figured it out, but as far as I can tell, the program only renames, it can't relocate the files or create new folders.

UserErr0r is right. The application is designed to just rename files. It currently cannot create new folders or move files. You would have to manually move your file to the "Television/Rome" folder and then scan the Television folder or use the shell extension to rename the file. On of the reasons for this is, that it will use the folder structure the file is in as a primary source for the information about the series name.
I'll try to include the moving feature in the next version.

About the automatic scan: Currently there is no automatic scan feature. You would either have to run the application or use the shell extension to rename the file. But I think I can add this as an option to the TV Show renamer.

ccMatrix,

I finally figured out what's going on...it looks like i only get rename options if the series is in a folder off the root of the drive, i.e. D:/One Piece will work, D:/Incoming/One Piece wont. Is this the intended functionality? If not, can i request a feature add for "subdirectory support"?

Subfolder support is already in there. I have my files under M:\Serien\Seriesname\Season X\Seriesname - sXXeXX - Title.avi and they work fine. One Piece is also one of the "problematic" series because of the episode titles but it should find them. The titles will probably be just boxes since windows doesn't understand the characters.

I've released a new beta version for 1.4. It now uses the filename as a primary source for the series name which should increase the accuracy. I will add an option dialog for this and some other features later. Also the shell extension is now called "Media Renamer" and includes an option to rename movies using the extension not just support for the tv series.

Enjoy

Quick question about this app... If I rename files, say, in my Recorded TV folders, does it update the name change in the MP database, so I can keep going to recorded TV in MP, or no, in which case I'd have to go to MyVideos?
