I have a girder based solution if people are interested.
It can do the following

launch a movie, or series
take it full screen and back
turn the volume up all the way or down all the way (only all up or all down)
(for a series) switch between episodes (previous / next)
play, pause and stop.

Let me know if there are any girder users interested

This may be a dumb question, but would this require us to install/configure Girder?

That's correct. It is a dumb question... lol :) just kidding.
Yes you would have install/configure girder.
I use Girder in combination with a USB-UIRT and MCE remote.

Girder does have a learning curve to it, but I am able to provide a configuration file.
So really this would be more for people who are existing girder users, since they have the hardware already.

Sure, post the config. I'm sure some of us will find it useful. I'm working on an Eventghost based solution and seeing how you did it in Girder would be very useful to me.

    Play button not working?

I see my queue, can browse just fine... but the play button doesn't seem to do anything.

I am running Vista 32 ultimate if that helps.

It doesn't really help, no :)

What does help, as always, is if you use the MediaPortal Watchdog/Log collector, zip up the logs after you have the problem, and post them. At the very least post your error.log.

The play button you see on screen isn't meant to be clicked. it's to indicate it can be played.
You have to bring up a sub/pop up menu and then you can do things like add to queue / remove. AND play.
I think everyone had a unique setup, so like when you play an mp3, you would press whatever button you have assigned to this function, say to "add to play list" whatever button you would push to bring up that pop up / sub menu, that's the same button you would use here, and it will give you a "play" option.
    hope that helps!

Edit: I believe that to be the F3 keyboard button. so whatever button you have on your remote that corresponds to the F3 button that would be the one that opens the sub menu.

Attached is my Netflix GML file for girder.
I'm only attaching the netflix group since everyone's girder config is probably going to be different.
If you are wondering why i have 2 event strings per command, it's because my remote send 2 different IR codes per every button. so if i press play, i get 1 IR code and then press play again, it send a 2nd different IR code. there are only 2, on the 3rd press of the play button, it sends the 1st IR code again.
    so that's why i have 2.
