You can do it with official installer too, so you can test and back to previous version.
Also i do it like this :
I'm on singleseat :
So i stop TVService : by doing : net stop tvservice (under cmd dos)
Going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Team MediaPortal and copy the actual dir to keep a backup.
Do the same for : C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal
Like this we can install from separate installer onto a copy of current installation.
After testing, we have just to rename the current version from new installer like "MediaPortal TV Server.TEST_PRE_1.2.3" and "MediaPortal.TEST_PRE_1.2.3" and copy back your backup
Like this i can keep setting etc. and ofc you are right, you can try with your current setup
