There are a number of applications around to convert either.ts or .mpg to .avi

Personally I use MCE Buddy which takes recorded files and then converts them autiomatically to.avi

It works by monitoring a particular folder, and if a .mpg or .ts exists converts it to .avi. You can set a delay to only record after a number of days so that if you do not want to keep a recording you can simply watch then delete it.

Works Great for me, Google is your friend.
