OK, I think Elecard trial message I am getting is to do with MainConcept decoders that I have (I have no idea where from)- does this suggest that my MPV decoder is also now broken and MP is falling back on MainConcept/Elecard?

Read this thread from begin. SAF have PoverDVD 8 MPEG2(DVD) decoder! :)

OK, I uninstalled PowerDVD8Ultra but now no PowerDVD MPEG2 decoder is listed- can I reinstall your SAF or do I have to do something manually?

Also, when I select MPV instead I get something about Elecard and my trial has run out and the video stops playing.

Plus, now the HD clips that used to work with Cyberlink (and brought up DirectVobSub) now do not even open at all- the ones that used to open but with sound only and no DirectVobSub appearing still work with no picture?

Try uninstall your Elecard software.
Reinstall SAF and configure again your MP video & DVD config acording to screens from begin of this threat.

Ok cool, thanks.. i'm going to spend some time to get it to work then.

Well, you can try SAF.
If you heve some tips for improvement, just give me know.

The problem is I have no Elecard or MainConcept software - from googling it looks like it might come with the Adobe Flash player but I'm not certain about that.

So it is OK to run the SAF install again even if I have not uninstalled first?

Yes. Second run will start uninstall procedure. I is absolutely safe.

OK, I uninstalled Haali and uninstalled SAF then reinstalled Haali and SAF..

Now, Cyberlink MPEG2 codec works, but both MPV (MPEG2) codec and MPC-HC (h.264) give blank screen for all videos (sound is working). MPC-HC codec does not work in DVBviewer either.:(

I cannot say what is wrong with your config...
BTW - MPV (MPEG2) is not part of SAF.
Try catalyst 8.5, if you don't try them yet - link on first page.

But how can it be an issue with Catalyst, when MPC-HC standalone player using the MPC-HC h.264 codec plays HD clips using DXVA no problem?

According to the DXVA page on Media Player Classic Home Cinema website:

"The MPC-HC Video decoder must be connected directly to the renderer. That means no intermediate filters such as DirectVobSub or ffdshow can be inserted between the decoder and the video renderer. "

If you see this post here discussing using MPC-HC codec on Vista, it is suggested that "MPEG4 AVC is disabled in ffdshow"- do you know how to adjust ffdshow settings as I cannot find how to do this?

OK, it turns out I didn't have ffdshow installed anyway so that couldn't be the issue and I also unregistered VSFilter (DirectVobSub) but it still doesn't work for me. Perhaps it is a driver issue or some bad stuff left in the registry I don't know.

I think may just go back to Cyberlink h.264 for the moment as MPC-HC (standalone player and filter) doesn't seem to work properly with 1080i .ts files (from UK/New Zealand HDTV- see here and here) and it doesn't seem to coexist well with the Cyberlink h.264 codec which does play these files OK (and with with acceleration in DVBviewer for me).
