My HTPC is an X2 3800+ with 1gb of RAM (maybe 2, I can't remember) & an Asus EN8600GT Silent video card. Running MP 0.2.3.0, it's able play anything, from avi's with external subs (an idx file & a rar file with .sub subs, or .srt subs) to 1080p mkv's with embedded subs. I'm able to cycle through the subs, including the ones embedded in mkv's, with the yellow remote button. Is this is because 0.2.3.0 uses video overlay?
I'd like to upgrade to MP 1.0 RC4, mainly because of the cool skins, but after keeping track of this thread, it looks like I'd either have to choose between subs & being able to watch HD movies. Is this correct? Some movies, like Syrianna, have to have subs & my HTPC isn't powerful enough to play 1080p movies without hardware acceleration. From a couple of pages back, it looks like both would be possible if MP read the subs from "null renderer", whatever that is (I know nothing about coding).
Perhaps I'll wait for MP 1.0 & see what happens with that.

You might be able to play 1080p content using CoreAVC as your decoder. It is very efficient and I am able to do full hd decoding with subs on a similar system to yours. I just have more memory.

With a few of the coreavc options turned off I was able to use CoreAVC with my P4 2.8ghz on a mx440 graphics card for 1080p mkv files. I think I had to turn off deinterlacing and some other post processing, then it was fine. I'd rather use dxva though, so I'm sticking with SAF!

I too currently use CoreAVC. I haven't bothered checking the options. I just left them at the default.
So with my set-up I'd be able play 1080p videos and be able to switch the subs on & off? What would I have to do? I'm not fully against reformatting my HD & starting from scratch again.

I guess that would depend on what you want in the end. If you want subs and you're fine with software encoding then stick with coreavc. If you want dxva and don't care about subs then I'm all for SAF. If I had a dual core machine I probably wouldn't bother with dxva, but I don't have the funds for a new pc.

I tried 1.0 RC2 & I had trouble getting some videos to play, mainly HD mkv's. If I remember, I couldn't get the subs to work properly either. I thought it was because MP doesn't use video overlay anymore.
Maybe I'll wait until after Christmas & give MP 1.0 a try. I'd hate to have to go through the holidays with it not working.

Having problems here also... Even with an X2 5500, but this is fas enough. I have no problems at all playing 1080P in Media Player Classic - HC; using the same filters.

Thats why I have now MPC-HC as an external player for movies. Mediaportal somehow doesn't seem to be able to handle it.

If you have CoreAVC here is what you need to do. First install VSFilter for the subs if you don't have it already. Then in mediaportal config go to the movie player tab make sure that CoreAVC is selected in the h264 drop down box. After that go to post processing and add VSFilter to the list.

You should be good to go after that. To turn on subs simply hit the info button on your remote and you will see a subtitles section.

Is it possible to address two sound devices at the same time?
Most of the time i want to use sound via hdmi.
But i would like to connect my headphones to the analog output of the htpc.
Does anybody know how i can make that work.

Unfortunately my TV has no headphone output :/

I believe you'd need an external sound processor. For instance, if you ran it through a receiver, you could use the headphone jack on that. You can have multiple audio outs, but you'd need multiple applications to address them. For instance, you configure MP to use one card and Winamp to use another. I'm pretty sure those are the only ways to do it.

Yes it works great with RC4! Go to movies and then to player and in there you can select your codecs/decoders. I currently am using CyberLink Video/SP Decoder for mpeg2, CoreAVC for h264 and AC3 filter for audio. In post processing I have directvobsub loaded for subtitle support. With this setup I feel I have the best quality and compatibility with all files that I play. Let me know if you need any help.
