Hi,

I have a problem which is probably not directly related to SAF but rather MediaPortal scaling up to my fullHD resolution, but it seems that there is a chance that the readers of this thread have good knowledge about the general problem of video quality so I give it a shot. I run SAF v4 on MP 1.1.1 with latest StreamedMP skin in 1920x1080. The problem I have is that when I watch SD-tv/video/series I get a very pixely picture and it feels almost like a milky whitish filter on the video. SAF is setup in the standard way as described in this thread.

I have tried two things to confirm that indeed this has to do with MP upscaling. 1) the quality is perfect when I open the same SD-resolution .ts-file with MPC-HC and maximize it (i.e. scale it up to 1080x1980 which is screen resolution) 2) the quality is perfect when I start MP in windowed (i.e. not fullscreen).

I have tried to search the forums and look through MP configuration but have not found any setting for this. Does anybody know how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Fnokke

Windows version? If you are on xp you can try to change the video render. VMR9 should work better in XP.

    I hope it could help.

    Bye!

Yes, sorry I realized later that my attachment had failed. VMR9 is on default. It has got to be the way MP transforms the SD TV picture into the 1080p resolution of the screen.

Is it necessary to explicitly setup a postprocessing filter to bring SD upto my 1920x1080 resolution? I find these filters for ffdshow, but is it also possible to setup after the PDVD9 codec which is the default for TV in SAF4?

No, it's not necessary. Moreover if it works in windowed mode it makes no sense than in fullscreen the output is different.

I still do not know wich OS you have, anyway you could try to change the render from vmr9 to evr (strongly suggested for vista and beyond). If you have XP you have to install .net3

Doesn't that depend on the problem? The Windowed mode opens up in in approx SD-resolution size (720x576, i.e. 1/4 of the screen size), so no scaling needs to take place.

I run XP SP3, you can see my system in my system dropdown.

Try to maximize the window (in windowed mode) and see what happens

This actually caused MP to crash with StreamedMP skin. I redid it in debug mode and then MP did not crash but I got the same bad quality when resizing to fullscreen. The log below shows what happens. As I understand it something called PlaneScene takes care of the remapping from 720x576 to (screen res) 1920x1080 (or actually 1000 in this case since I believe the frame in windowed mode takes a some pixels) ... I notice something called PixelRatio set to 1, is this perhaps the problem? Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thx, Fnokke

    Hi All,

I have just installed SAF4 but cannot select PDVD9 in the TV Codec selection. The instructions mention the codec is free with PDVD download - is there a way of just getting the codec without installing PDVD (it keeps asking do you want to buy after you download the free test copy)? What's the best site? I see PDVD10 is out - should I use 10 or 9. Sorry if I sound like a novice.

    Would appreciate any pointers!!

    Try SAF5 *unlocked*.
