when you try to reproduce do you have

default refreshrate 50 or 60 hz ?
movie that plays refresh rate = 23.976 or 24hz ?

Tried all combinations of default refresh rates. My material is usually 23.976Hz, 50Hz or 60Hz. I don't use MP for watching TV. So far regardless of which combination I use I can't see the described stuttering. The only thing I see every 10-20 starts of MP is that the first movies I play, every second frame get's dropped. But I can't even reproduce this reliable. So it's a lot of guess work for me. As soon as I can reproduce this on demand, I'm sure I can come up with a fix rather quickly.

    PS: running Win7 as well.

isnt the 2nd frame dropping the same issue ?
can i somewhere see if this happens ?
I can reproduce it on my machine

btw when the stuttering happens (or slow motion playing of the video) the sound plays just fine

In this case the Media Foundation Framework returns a wrong frame duration (you see it in the evr.log). It's exactly double of the correct one. That's why each frame get displayed for the double amount of time and the subsequent next one is dropped, because it's late now. It's independent of any refresh rate changes. Windows just reports the wrong frame duration.

It happens every 10-20 starts of MP with the first movies played regardless of refresh rate changer or not. Only happens on 23.976fps files. But this is the only similar thing I can see on my end. But again, not reproducible on demand and the logs (even if I enable tracing in the source) are inconclusive where the issue comes from.

I made some changes to dshowhelper.dll that hopefully solved this. And if it's the same root cause the stuttering described in this thread should also stop. I started MP a 100 times, played a movie and every time it was fine. But that can just be a coincidence. It's hard to fix a bug or find a workaround if you can't trigger the problem on demand.

Waiting for your feedback if the posted dshowhelper.dll makes any difference. If not I'll provide a debug version that logs more details for every frame because I am running out of ideas, but really like to have this fixed before 1.1.0 final (preferable for the RC of course).

AW: Stutter after refresh rate change

I just found that thread. For me the playback of video files in Mediaportal sometimes stutters - for example after resuming a playback of a movie. To make the playback smooth again I just skip 15 seconds backwords on my remote. In most cases the video is smooth again after this action. Sometimes I have to skip more than once to have a smooth playback again.

I also think that the refresh rate change has nothing to do with the stuttering.

That does not happen everytime I watch a video with Mediaportal. Only sometimes. This is also not a matter of codecs. Using FFDShow/MPCVideo/CoreAVC - the behaviour of stuttering is always the same. I am experiencing this on many different setups - even on very potent quadcore systems with fast GPUs.

I must admit that watching Videos with Mediaportal there always seems to be stutter here and there happening. I am not experiencing those stutters with XBMC and other Mediaplayers.

    hi scythe.

    I tried the new dll.
I am unable to start live TV, nothing happens. MP sits at 50% cpu on dual core cpu. It is quite hard to kill using taskmanager.
    Playback never seems to start.

    I tried on latest svn.

    /gibman

Can you try this dshowhelper.dll build and let me know if it's better, worse or the same?

I made some small adjustment in hope to narrow the source of the problem down. I still can't reproduce it, so I need your help with testing here.

Also does ff/rew solve the problem the same way Alt+Tab does?

Very strange. What's inside the evr.log? Sounds to me like all frames are late and are dropped. Live TV and other files shouldn't make a difference here for the presenter.

I have similar issue with MP once in a while where playback never starts and CPU utilization is high. But this is a different problem and probably graph related.

Can you try to reproduce the issue with some files instead of live TV?

Also can someone else who doesn't have this stuttering problem try the provided DLL with live TV? Maybe we are getting closer to the actual issue and it's related to the mixer delivering frames way too late. Just a guess though.

here is my evr.log without applying the dll
i put the default frame rate on 50 and put in refreshrate to play 25 hz material on 25 hz (100%guaranteed stutter)

so this log is on playing 25 hz material

with dll file the 25 hz movie is playiing without stutter :D although it takes more time to start it (10secs or so)

but playing a 23.976 1080p gives black screen with stuttering audio
    see ebclosed the evr.log from 23.976 1080p
