There are already other posts open:
1) there's some work in progress about DVB subtitles, TV server 3 supports it but not the client (you can't use it with MP)
2) teletext subtitles basically works but the teletext screen still all black so you can't use it.
3) You probably need US/Canadian Closed Caption and maybe someone can contradict me but are not supported.

It appears that MP somehow caches previously used subtitle files for subsequent use next time the same video is played. My problem...
Default Direct Sound Device was the problem.
MPAR worked better than Dircect Sound, but is still a problem.
Changed Audio Renderer to use the TV and it's working.
