You can use multiple ways, the easiest is to give it the *EXACT* same name as your movie, but with a supported subtitle extension (SRT, SUB, etc).
So Movie.Title.Example.2010.avi needs Movie.Title.Example.2010.srt, every space, char has to match, then MediaPortal will use that file to display the subtitles if configuration is set for them (which you adjust via context menu).
If you have multiple subtitles, then just extend those to the name, and you will be able to select them via the context menu. For example Avatar has forced subtitles (unless you know Na'vi language), but also full, so you can use the following:
what happens is that the subtitles seem to auto-load once the movie plays and can't be turned off. however, via the context menu, i can activate subtitles as well. these subtitles overlay the first subtitles (meaning there are 2 subtitles running at the same time). the latter subtitles can be turned off, but as i said, the first subtitles can't.
The video probably has subtitles embedded into them. There is no way to turn those on/off, as they have been made a permanent part of the video.
Those are sometimes reffered to as hardsubs, where the subtitles you can turn on/off are called softsubs.
PS: It can also mean you have another subtitle processor working at the same time, for example you are using ffdshow and did not disable the subtitle processor in that one, so it always shows subtitles.
the video has no subtitles embedded, but your hint about ffdshow got me thinking....i don't use ffdshow to decode MPEG-2 videos so i thought the ffdshow setting wouldn't impact the playback...just to be sure i deactivated subtitles in ffdshow and what do you know? subtitiles are behaving normal now!
I'm running 2.5 with the WMC skin.
I have .mp4 files, along with the related .srt files in the same folder.
I can watch the movies just fine.
In past versions of MP, like 2.4x, I could press the More Info button on my remote twice, and on the second press, an option for showing/choosing the subtitles was listed. I'd select the...

I don't think so, because MP has no way of knowing at which timestamp the external player stopped playback.
Best way to achieve this would be to use an auto-resume feature in your external player itself. (MPC-HC can do that, I don't know about VLC)
