It does tell you about the not registered components. Btw: which "trick" do you currently use to allow unsigned drivers? If you install all updates the dynamic methods are all failing and only F8 does still work. However according to M$ this will be removed as well...

I'd simply sum up: there's no profit running W2k8 for MP's TVService at all therefore your best option is to stay away from it.

The simple fact being able to use DirectX10 and DXVA 2.0 without having to use Vista along with a faster more powerfull kernel are an advantage in my opinion.

Profit doesnt matter.. I like a challenge thats all ..

Yes it was patched into SP1 (I wanted to point out advatages to Windows Server 2003 as well), but Vista is still a bunch of crap .

Right, but Windows XP was "usable" at the time Windows Server 2003 was released so the decision is more indifferent in this case.

But who could call Vista "usable" (honestly, except people who just work on it using office applications telling everybody "hey I like Vista.") today ? So the desision between Vista and Windows Server 2008 is a question every reasonable person could / should ask themself.
(The big disadvantage for most people could however be the pricing, which will drop fast on the other hand.)

Well going by the contents of this thread, Vista works far far better than Server 2008 does for MediaPortal.

Vista is what £150? From what I could find Server 2008 is about £1000 for the OS, CALs are less but thats the base OS. Oh and thats retail, not OEM.

I'm not the greatest Vista fan, but really, XP or 2K3 seem a much better choice to me.

i am planning on building a server for my home network. running tvserver, backup programs, printer, all hard drives, and few other things.

is windows server 2003 or 2008 a good option?

apart from other things, i am interested in user/password protection for hard drives sharing over the network, which is not totally possible in windows xp.

can someone recommend me.
