TV Server and Window 2008 Win2k8 Server (3 Viewers)

i am planning on building a server for my home network. running tvserver, backup programs, printer, all hard drives, and few other things.

is windows server 2003 or 2008 a good option?

apart from other things, i am interested in user/password protection for hard drives sharing over the network, which is not totally possible in windows xp.

can someone recommend me.

so how can i manage my share drives and folders with xp? i cant use vista cause my system is not very powerfull.

i would like to password restrict some drives on the server pc so that only one computer in the house can access it. the problem i think is that in the server there is only 1 user called (htpc1) and in my computer i have user (gixxer)

but if i create more users in the server it adds boot trouble plus uses space.

I'm interested in any tips people might have for getting TVServer running on Server 2008 as well. I have a well powered server with many hard drives that I use for file storage, and it would be ideal to use it to manage TV Server.

I moved my Hauppage WinTV-HVR-1800 over to the server, and was able to install the drivers painlessly. TVServer installed fine, and the service started ok, but like others have experienced the card was not recognized by TVServer.

I tried registering the 4 .dlls originally posted here and couldn't get MSVidCtl.dll to register properly.

I think TVServer would benefit greatly from being supported under Server 2008 sometime in the future.

I vote for this also ;-)
Would realy appreciate a support of TV-server on 2008 server/64bit.
As far as I can see, there is two things to handle:
64bit: should be same problems, as Vista64SP1 (same Core/codelevel)
"server" - which might include missing dlls or functionalities in comparison to vista (requiring additiona registerings etc.)
Thankful for any feedback and for a description of someone, who managed doing it ....

Yup, I agree here, in need of getting TVserver working on Server 2008 (x64). Just installed TV Server fine onto server 2008 but the TV Server List is empty. If anyone has a batch file or script for registering those pesky missing dlls would be mush appreciated (or else Im gonna have to pratt about taking my server apart and sticking my tv tuner cards into my desktop and that will be one big pain in the rear)

Just installed MP Server RC1 on W2K8 just to find out that my TV card was not detected. Used to run it fine on W2K3 so I would love to have the same running on W2K8. I don´t really understand why a Mediaportal SERVER is not supposed to run on a Server OS. Seems strange to me. I know most people will probably run it on a workstation os but if you have a server at home (and some people will once Windows Home server is more common) why not use your server to also run MP Server ??

Also, the messages popping up saying that MP does not support W2K8 are really nasty. Too often (at least 5 times during installation and now on every start of TV Server configuration ? Besides, it is somewhat bold to write in that message that Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows Server 2008 due to a lack of critical updates

most people at home with a 'server' actually just have NAS boxes. Windows Home Server is really geared towards that too. So supporting Win2K3 and Win2K8 would add a huge of work far not a lot of benefit, there really aren't going to be many poepl running 2K8.

You have also hit on the major issue with 2K8, TV cards are not supported. So there isn't a lot of point in making sure MP run on a platform that can't actually record TV without some magor hacking about. Having about that could break at any point with updates from Microsoft or conflict with other services etc.

I got this out of another forum... haven't got my copy of Windows Server 2008, yet so I couldn't test this:

First enable Desktop Experience then copy the following AX files from a Vista installation (windows/system32) to the system32 directory on W2K8.
Cut and paste the commands in a batch file to register them.

How I got TV Server working on Windows 2008 Server (32-bit)

I found this package on the internet after doing some searching. I was able to get MyTheatre working and I no longer get errors when starting the TV Service Config.... I am currently scanning channels right now.

What I did was to extract this rar archive to my C: drive on my Windows Vista SP1 computer.
I then ran the C:\bdaforserver\Setup For x86\Get BDA Vista Files.bat (I did not include my files in the attachment due to possible legal reasons).
I then Copied the C:\bdaforserver directory over to the C: drive on my Windows 2008 Server.
I then ran the C:\bdaforserver\Setup For x86\Setup BDA.bat on my server.
I rebooted and MyTheatre now recognizes my Hauppauge Nova S Plus DVB-S card. (It didn't recognize it before).
I scanned some channels and tuned a few to make sure it was working.

I then installed the TV Service (I already had SQL Express installed) and opened the TV Server Configuration utility.... no more tv service errors (accept the this OS is not supported...) and it recognized my TV Card... I am currently scanning channels and it is looking very promising.

Keep in mind that I did not write the batch files or compile these files... I simply downloaded the package off another forum on the internet. I did not modify the files or add any. I am not responsible for what you do with them... and I cannot offer any support since I myself do not have any knowledge of the files contained within this package. Hopefully these files will work for most of the users out there that are like myself and have a home media server that they want to use Windows 2008 on along with the TV Server.

You may also want to install the Desktop Experience Feature as well as Disable the windows 2008 firewall (all 3) before attempting this.
