That's a media foundation codec that would be used by WMP, but hopefully you're using LAV which will be able to do the same if the mode (native, copyback etc) supports it. On an Intel HD400 you will struggle with madVR unless you change it to just using DXVA scaling everywhere. (EDIT just realised 2 different people :) )

Yes. I'm using LAV. With my MP config i'm back to VMR9 now after i tested MadVR with which i have to say i got the best result but with high CPU/GPU consumption so that my fans worked hard to cool the rig down. With EVR i got the blank screen problem when DRR adepted the refresh rate to the played media. With EVR and without DRR the media playback was not really satisfactory. Back with VMR9 i was surprised that all is ok. DRR not nessesary, barely CPU/GPU consumption. All fine i think.

But MS - you fucked this up with 1709. I can hardly believe it.

I made a further attempt yesterday to get the CFU working seeing as both MS and AMD have made recent changes. All installed OK including the latest MS updates, though it is taking an awfull long time now. First thing I tried was to play a 3D Bluray disk with Cyberlink PowerDVD 15 and breakthrough it worked in 3D:) then I made some changes to the video driver settings (I had done a DDU clean install of the latest driver so needed some customising), tried again and it was still working but when I stopped it I got a blackscreen (no signal on TV, looks like something is still running but no way, that I have found to get a picture back) and I had to use the power button and reboot.:( I then went back to a slightly older driver (again DDU clean install) and again 3D played in PowerDVD for several times (also tested from MP using PowerDVD as external player) before again got the blackscreen on stop after which I always got it on stop. I tried uninstalling and reinstalled PowerDVD but still got the blackscreen on stop. I then ran a series of test with MP and all seemed OK although the colour and brightness seemed a bit off. When I attempted to make some changes via the AMD Radeon settings things got really weird, turning the brightness up or down tinted the picture pink or mauve resp. rather than brightening or dimming it, contrast and other settings also had unusual effects.I tried disabling Gaming mode via the registry (not sure if that is necessary with Win 10 pro as the on/off switch is still present in the settings) but no change, rebooting, clean install of the vid. drivers again, all to no avail.
At that point I gave up and went back to 1703 using an image backup. Anyone any ideas as to what is happening, particularly regarding the colour settings (which work fine with 1703), I wonder if it got into an HDR mode, my TV is neither 4K or HDR but the AVR is capable of both so maybe the OS or vid. driver got confused:unsure: I have not seen this problem on my 1709 desktop PC which has a full HD display but no AVR. I could live with and work on the PowerDVD issue but with the colour as well it is a no go and I fully agree with that end comment that @Cowboy made on his most recent post.
I don't want to give up on this (I like to keep things up to date) so any advice or help will be most gratefully received

@joecrow It sounds like MS/AMD will be doing more updating soon. Have you tried different output formats eg RGB over YCbCr?

I've just discovered the recent MS hotfix didn't actually fix my PC, it was that it reset the PCI speed back to x16. Something in my hardware was causing the speed to be stuck in a lower state, and so it struggled with 4k. I found this out when the problem returned 2 days later, GPU-Z showed the speed dropped and hence I needed to reconsider my attitudes towards PC cooling :)
