When I scan the analog input, it does pick up channels, but then returns an error "novideoaudiodetected" when I try to preview the channel in the tv server setup.

It was my understanding that this is because the HVR4000 uses software decoding for the analog input, but if Datagrafx has the same setup up working, does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong/missing in my setup?

Is it usual for the frequency of an analog channel to be 0MHz?

Yes I think that it is normal for it to be 0Mhz because it has a channel number which corresponds to a frequency.
Can you try the following:

-Open MediaPortal TV Server, get to the section where you are just about to preview a channel
-Delete the contents of c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MediaPortal TV Server\log
-Click preview on an analog channel
-zip up all the files now created in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MediaPortal TV Server\log
and attach them to your next post.

No promises but we can at least take a look

*edit* Datagrafx can you do the same then we can compare the logs.

*edit* Some further detail: I at one point installed the bundled software that came with the HVR4000 - that is I installed Power Cinema version 5.1.

When I subsequently decided that I would stick to mediaportal only, I uninstalled Power Cinema.

Then, when I heard that perhaps analog channels were possible, I tried to reinstall Power Cinema (from the same CD), but now the installation fails to complete - it returns several errors saying that certain files don't match other files.

So, went to the Happauge website, and downloaded the software they provided - winTV, and that is currently installed on my system.

Since I don't have a HVR4000 to paly with it's hard to say but lets take a look at Datagrafx 's logs see where the difference starts.
The first thing I see in the log that's not right? is:

2007-11-22 18:36:11.203125 [10]: analog: ConnectEncoderFilter video:False audio:True

But really I don't know! And to be honest I shy away from anything other than hardware encoding when it comes to analog. HOWEVER! Like you say if it's proven to be working (Datagrafx you're our man!) to be possible then there is no reason you can't get it working with persistence!

For those of you in Wellington, looks like the DVB-T test transmissions are all underway. Whilst I am not in line of sight with Kaukau, I was able to tune at least 10 TV stations and 2 radio stations using my HVR4000 without any problems. My normal analog signal from Kaukau is just rubbish so, this DVB-T stuff looks like its going to rock! The video from TVOne, TV2 and TV3 looks good but I only seem to be getting part of the image. Not quite sure what's going on with the aspect ratio's or whether its just my MP4 codec's.

mcraenz, whilst I was able to get MP to produce an analog picture from my HVR4000 card - well just once, it could not record from it!!! I am not sure how Datagrafx got it to work, but I gave up on analog and the HVR4000 because of the lack of hardware encoding. Once DVB-T is turned on it will become irrelevant also. Pity I agree, because otherwise the HVR4000 is a really good choice. Why Hauppauge did not include a hardware encoder is just beyond me.

Yeah it's stupid, I mean they don't even offer a more expensive card with hardware encoder! You just can't buy it! Then only hybrid card with a hardware encoder is the HVR1300 DVB-T+Analog. Which seems like a good option for NZers in DVB-T areas

Oh well... I think that this exercise might be a dead end! One question - does anyone know whether Prime will be broadcast when DVB-T is switched on? Thanks for the help

Maybe not initially but I'm sure they will have move sooner or later they would crazy not to? I'm not sure if anyone else agrees but I've noticed my self watching my crisp clear digital channels a lot more than the old analog ones just because they are a pleasure to watch. Of course it depends on what is on but in general I'm inclined to look at the digital ones first. Has anyone got any official word on prime? Geekzone might be a better place to ask.

Prime should be FTA digital NOW! Why have a free to air channel AND own the satellite that broadcasts Freeview only to broadcast Prime in Analogue?? There must be someone we can petition about this... How about the Prime Minister .. ooops my bad, I forgot she doesn't give a rats what the people think - if they don't agree with her they're obviously right wing extremists!

But seriously we need to get hold of an email address at Sky (actually I've got one...) and hit it with requests for Digital free to air Prime...

Unfortunately Bleazle, writing SKY will not help either. They care less about you than the PM does!!! From SKY's perspective - you are not the customer, you are the product. Their customers are the advertisers.

So, the only way to deal with this, is to get the advertisers to only be interested in advertising on a digital platform that is available to everyone and not just SKY "products" i.e. us. When SKY realise that, they will unencrypt Prime on their SAT transponders then we can watch it also - or move it the the Freeview transponders. Frankly all they need to do is transmit it unencrypted. Considering its supposed to be FTA - I do not know why its encrypted at all.

Sad fact but true.

mcraenz - I agree the HVR1300 is a good option but with only two PCI slots it means I have to loose a DVB-S card. Of course, if the multiple back end option in TVE3 was working then that would not be a problem. But right now I like having two DVB-S cards so I can record TV1,2 and 3 all at the same time plus anything else from the satellite for that matter - off just two cards. Once the Terrestial service gets under way though, an HVR4000 and HVR1300 cards kinda covers all the options until the analog service is dumped. For me, I will live without Prime (and the need for analog) until they wake up.
