I tried the TV server and would use a combine single seat/multi seat setup but it did now work right (it was a while ago). when it come out of beta I may go back to it
I tried the TV Server but the EPG failed up update half the time then it would disappear. I had it sitting idle for hours went to check the EPG and it was still blank. This was done on a clean install. The wife started bending my ear after a few days of her prorams not being recorded so I reverted back to the original MP which I never had any problems with.
I would like to use the tv server but not in its current state.
I use USBUIRT to change channels on my Virgin media box connected to my PVR350 - when I last tried TVEngine 2 I couldn't find any information on it about changing the channel..
Can the ability of Changing channels via the TVEngine Remote IR senders such as USBUIRT be added to support this or the least added to that comparison page - will save some time of people thinking of upgrading to a version that doesn't provide that support...
I'm using 0.2.2.0 with latest SVN.
Tried TVServer 0.3 in the weekend. Latest SVN. It didnt quite get the EPG from DVB, so I went back to good ol' 0.2.2.0. I'm waiting for an official release, not beta.
Thanks for the comparison, however, I think it is somewhat pro-TV3. Only all the positive things from TV3 is mentioned, whereas, the areas where TV2 is superior is not mentioned.
Like:
Build-in support for the Hauppauge Blaster
Powerscheduler support
More???
After spending time to get everything I wanted working (including EPG etc...) I am concerned that going down the TV server option as it might break my working MP 0.2.2 setup.
Apart from full disk backup/restore, how can I try TV Server "safely"?
I voted for 2.2 with TVEngine 2. I have tried the TV Engine around Christmas but something happened in the code and it broke the Technotrend CI support. It was broken for a while so I stuck with 2.2 and am still stuck with it.
Things I would like to see changed (fixed)
1. DVB/Teletext subtitles - Absolutely must have this working soon, also they must be recorded along with the stream (DVB Viewer can do this)
2. My old nemesis the Disney channels (on Thor 0.2W / Canal+) No matter what language I configure (even cycling through the 4 of them manually) the language is Nor/Swe or Dan. I have had to make a little back door to get the English/Finnish audio stream to work, I don't think this workaround is possible in the TVe3, I will explain more about this if someone asks.
3. Must timeshifting be on all the time? It just slows things down and makes problems, if I want it it is 3 button pushes away.
Things I do like more than TVe2
1. Channel changes are much quicker, TVe2 = 15 seconds TVe3 = 5 seconds on encrypted channels.
Plus just about everything what everyone else has written above me.
ps I never did get the client/server thing to work either.
You may wish to make people aware of a post I made detailing how to easily switch between different MP versions without disturbing your original install. It's in the Wiki here
This might encourage people to try tv3 svn's out more when they can do so without ruining a current working setup.
I have tried a few svn's with tv3/tv2 along the way BUT there is a problem that has been in svn for months whereby playing back some recordings will freeze as if paused on my machine. I then have to exit, re-play and try to jump over this point as it will consistently freeze at the same point. I meant to raise a bug report but never found the time to do it justice. I get no such problems with 2.2
I was unable to watch tv from a second seat over 54g WiFi using tv3, though over LAN 100 it worked OK though very slow to initialise and would often get confused. Though unable to stream live TV over WiFi, I could playback a recording via a share using MyVideo over WiFi fine.
The multiple channel recording got really confusing a lot of the time, just recording the same program on 3 diff concurrent recordings, also being able to step back to tv prior to the last channel change i.e from a different channel got very confusing and is IMHO not a good idea. If this facility is required it should be implemented differently eg if jump back to before start of 'current channels' timeshift, present a listbox of previous channels timeshifts in time descending order and allow user to select one (drop any less than 2 mins as they will just be surfing). I'd check out how MythTV handles this they do it quite good.
Timeshift disable should also be allowed which will instead use a 1 minute timeshift memory buffer (or allow user to alloc as much ram to it as they wish).
It'll be great when it is rock solid with a good web front end. I think some work should be done on optimising the user response times throughout MP, to make it run as slick as possible as some areas are still quite sluggish.
So for me, I use 2.2 and try an SVN every few weeks.
