i would also love to have control of subs in an mkv container just like audio which currently works perfectly.

Just by pressing the green button on your MCE remote the audio track changes when you play an mkv file.

Hi,
thanks a lot for your work, I have just read the post, tonight I will try at home, but I have a question: which name do I have to give to the subfiles?, that is to say, if i have two srt files associates to an avi file, with the following names:

Title.avi
Title.language1.srt
Title.language2.srt

Is this going to work?? Thanks a lot

Hi guys!
Just want to share how I've got it all to work, I can now choose subtitle-language and get it on/off with my MCE remote.

1, Install Vobsub if you haven't, I don't have any more "subtitle-viewing"-program installed (i'm not having ffdshow installed either).
2, In MP Config, be sure to check the "show subtitles" button in the Movie-section. Also choose your default language and font settings.
3, In the section "Movie Post-Processing", add DirectVobSub (auto-loading version) as a filter. Check the box, and then go into "filter properties".
4, Under the "General" tab, be sure to set "Loading" to "Always load", otherwise it won't work (it didn't for me anyway...).
5, Exit MP Config.
6, Be sure that the movie and subtitle-file has the same name.
7, Start MP, start your movie and voíla! You can now choose language (or disable subtitles) by pressing the yellow button on your MCE remote.

I hope this will help someone, because it's a very useful function inside MP!

Your guide works perfect, very happy that i dont need to have an external player. Thank you very much! :D

Hello all,

I have followed this thread from the beginning and also searched for similar information in other threads, but I still can't find a definitive answer on how subtitles, either embedded or external, are supported in mediaportal. I will list my findings on the subject and I would be very glad if any developer of mediaportal would answer my questions. Sure, I know it's open source and since I am a developer myself I could dig inside the source to find my answers, but something that will take me hours or days will be a matter of minutes for a mediaportal developer to answer.

By using latest haali media splitter and vsfilter 2.37 (also known as directvobsub) I have managed the following:
1. mkv files with embedded subtitles show up in mediaportal and can be controlled from either OSD or the L key
2. mkv files with external (srt,idx/sub etc) subtitles show up in mediaportal but they cannot be controlled from either OSD or the L key
3. avi files with embedded subtitles show up in mediaportal and can be controlled from either OSD or the L key
4. avi files with external (srt,idx/sub etc) subtitles show up in mediaportal but they cannot be controlled from either OSD or the L key
5. mpeg-ts files with .ts extention with external (srt,idx/sub etc) subtitles do not show up in mediaportal at all. If renamed to mpg extention, subtitles do show up but they cannot be controlled from either OSD or the L key
6. mpeg-ps files with .mpg extention with external (srt, idx/sub etc) subtitles show up in mediaportal but they cannot be controlled from either OSD or the L key.

As it seems to me, only embedded subtitles can be controlled. External subtitles cannot. Some people have posted in this thread that they can control external subtitles with the subtitle button of their microsoft remote. I don't have such a remote, but maybe they are controlling VSfilter directly and not mediaportal's feature? mediaportal's subtitle change/hide is done with either OSD (if skin supports it) or the L key in full screen video.

Can a developer comment on the above findings and answer the following questions:

1. What functionality has the checkbox "Show subtitles" in mediaportal configuration? It doesn't seem to effect anything
2. Is the font selected for subtitles in mediaportal configuration used anywhere, and if it does, where? vsfilter seems to always use it's own font.
3. Is it possible to clean up all this subtitle mess and do internal subtitle management, as in media player classic? or somehow "control" vsfilter's functionality from inside mediaportal for external subtitles just like it is controlled for embedded subtitles?

Looking forward for your comments,

malakudi

reagan+carter: The functionality you mention has been already implemented and works well, that's why all embedded subtitles work well and can be controlled inside mediaportal (though "Show subtitles" check box - in the Movies section - and font configuration doesn't seem to do anything). The functionality which seems missing is the control of external subtitles. OK, one solution is to embed subtitles in files that support that (.mkv, .avi, .divx) but this is not an elegant solution and doesn't work for example for .mpg, .ts files. I hope that a developer can enlighten us on the subject.

yes it is the current code that actually loads subtitles within containers, my point was thaht perhaps you can extend the vobsub calls and the feature set already implemented.
The code to control external subtitles does NOT yet exist in Mediaportal.

here is the systray code for vobsub as designed by Gabest: http://www.koders.com/cpp/fid73E4AC5ACA9FAB5CCC1DA25432BD63913A077691.aspx Maybe this could give you some ideas for a patch proposal ;)

reagan+carter: So, you confirm that there is no external subtitling handling in mediaportal? This was my conclusion too, I just wanted a confirmation that this is the case and I haven't missed anything. The checkbox "Show subtitles" was there for some "future" usage that was never implemented? I will look inside the code from Monday (we have a carnival weekend here in Greece). Thank you for your interest,

I do not know why this xml was in my theme folders, it must have sneaked in some time ago (years?). I simply removed the file. The Latest Media Handler plugin seems to be working as expected. I've had no lock-ups.
