Hi folks

Just wanna say, that you can toggle subtitles on/off with FFDshow inside Mediaportal by pressing ctrl+alt+s (default)

/Nyll

Hi Nyll,
can you also tell us how do you switch the subtitles between different languages?

Ok, I got subtitle switching within MP working. Here's how ;)

My problem was that I had been using the Gordian Knot Codec Pack (I used to do a lot of authoring & transcoding). I:
-completely uninstalled all my codecs & splitters.
-installed CCCP
-went into Media Portal's configuration tool, looked at the control scheme for the "yellow" & "green" teletext buttons on the MCE remote (which I don't have, given I'm using rev2-alternate remote) & mapped those settings to "guide" & "live tv" buttons (I don't need DVR functionality so I sacrificed those buttons; I don't find broadcast North American TV wroth recording)
-"guide" was set to "next audio" & "live tv" (to its right) was set to "next subtitle".
-Media Portal was set to subtitle = on by default.

With this setup, I can cycle through the audio streams & subtitle streams contained within MKV, mutant-AVI, & OGM files (i say mutant avi since the avi container was never meant to use multiple streams). I can also turn subs off with the OSG (hitting info then going to the audio/sub delay control).

W00t.

To anyone else who's having trouble getting external subs to work: pack them in an MKV container. w00t it works it works it works weeheehee!

i didnt quite understand this part of how you manage to switch off the buildin subtitles of an mkv file within MP. Can you please explain this better?

Thanks

When you're in fullscreen video and press "Y" on the keyboard, the OSD will come up and there is an option for subtitles. In this option, you can "enable" or "disable" subtitles and adjust the "delay".

I could never get this to work with SRT, SUB, or SSA type subtitles.

IMO, it is very inconvenient to convert everything to MKV container... FFDSHOW subtitle works, I'm using that now.

thanks Lolento. I have to find how to bring up the OSD using MCE RC and spinsafe revolve skin but i think i can manage that.

i dont convert everything to mkv. Pretty much everything i download and keep on my HDD storage is in mkv format.

I just spend an afternoon trying to figure the whole subtitle mess out. I now have working subtitles for mkv files, but not for external subtitle files. I also havent found out yet how to change the subtitle text size or appearance, changes to the MP and Vobsub filter dont seem to do anything ? Does anyone here have any guidance on that, because I am lost, and the subtitles are frustratingly small on my 32" LCD.

I wondered, is it possible to have a OSD menu similar to how you can pick between several audio streams ?

For example, if you had an English and Spanish Subtitle, you would go into the OSD menu, and than there would be 3 options, no subtitle, spanish, english. Would make life much easier for a lot of people instead of having to custom map remote buttons.

Also, if you dont switch on subtitles in MP setup, than there is no way to switch them on during watching a movie, as per default the remote doesnt have a button mapped to switch on subtitles. This is especially frustrating for a newbie.

Hi guys!
Just want to share how I've got it all to work, I can now choose subtitle-language and get it on/off with my MCE remote.

1, Install Vobsub if you haven't, I don't have any more "subtitle-viewing"-program installed (i'm not having ffdshow installed either).
2, In MP Config, be sure to check the "show subtitles" button in the Movie-section. Also choose your default language and font settings.
3, In the section "Movie Post-Processing", add DirectVobSub (auto-loading version) as a filter. Check the box, and then go into "filter properties".
4, Under the "General" tab, be sure to set "Loading" to "Always load", otherwise it won't work (it didn't for me anyway...).
5, Exit MP Config.
6, Be sure that the movie and subtitle-file has the same name.
7, Start MP, start your movie and voíla! You can now choose language (or disable subtitles) by pressing the yellow button on your MCE remote.

I hope this will help someone, because it's a very useful function inside MP!

I followed Winux's suggestion on port #35 and it fixed my problem.

I can use use the Yellow teletext button on my MCE remote to toggle subtitle and to turn it off completely.

FYI, I have both ffdshow and DirectVodSub installed. However, ffdshow is no configured to handle subtitle, only VobSub. I've configured the post processing properties as per Winux's suggestion on post 35.

Thanks everyone!

Okay, I have also seen this post and done like said. Two points here that need clarification. Does this work with external subtitles, i have a mkv with internal subtitles, there it worked fine. a avi with external subtitles (.sub) didnt work, eg always displays and cant be switched on/off by the yellow button.

Also, the yellow button is mapped to ACTION_NEXT_SUBTITLE , this seems to be different to the command show subtitles. does this action cycle through the subtitles and no subtitle options ?

I'm using it with ONLY external subtitles in the form of .srt files. I've never used it with MKV before (don't even have matroska installed). SRT files works fine for me as said. On a side note, I also tried using the .idx/.sub combination but didn't seem to work - the subs didn't even come on. But I'm happy just being able to get .srt working with my avi files, especially the Chinese/Mandarin .srt files.

And yes my MCE Remote Yellow button is mapped to "Action Next Subtitle". When I play an avi file with subs, the default defavior is it'll display sub1, when I press the yellow button it'll toggle as follow: sub2 --> off --> sub1... etc,etc...

I too followed Winux's instructions in post 35 (see my post #41) to get it to work.
I use AutoGK to rip my dvds & set it to create external subs. Because I don't know which are closed captioned & which are forced, I just select all the English subs.
AutoGK creates an .idx file that I would think indexes the subs & a .rar file that contains the subs. Inside the rar file is one .sub file, even though I select multiple subs. Because of this, I think you either need the .idx file, or to have more than one subtitle in the file.

I do not know why this xml was in my theme folders, it must have sneaked in some time ago (years?). I simply removed the file. The Latest Media Handler plugin seems to be working as expected. I've had no lock-ups.
