When I rebooted this morning, the same problem came back. But I did find my error, it turned out I had accidently clicked on "Filtering: On startup filter by: Unwatched Movies" in "Moving Pictures Configuration". Don't know how I did that. (n)

The subtitles are embedded in the TS video file, not a separate subtitle file.
I can turn them on and off in MP, and sometimes there is more than one type to choose from (eg. older teletext).
I tested a file in VLC and the subtitles displayed correctly when positioned at the top, so it seems to be a MP display issue.
