Can media portal work with a server that is distributing files? That is a local area connection server that has several folders of movies and shows? can the software work with that?

yep, I use that as my setup. the server upstairs has all the media on it and the folders are shared.
The HTPC downstairs just has the folders mapped in MP config as \\server\xxx.

The only thing I think you cant do is record live TV to external shares as the MP service runs as local admin and doesn't have network access, but like I said, this is only for recording TV, not playing movies, etc.

Welcome to the forums, too :)

try to map it to "my pc" as a network drive, and then use that drive letter in mp.

Thank you for this tip! I'm moving MP TV Server to a new machine. I installed the 64-bit version and most of the MP firewall rules were set to Public.
