How to keep a skin up to date (1 Viewer)

That's kinda what I figured out already. Something changes in Mediaportal and a skin becomes outdated...
What I need to know is: what exactly influences this behaviour? If old controls are used? old id's? new .xml files have been added?
And: how can I keep up and prevent a skin to become outdated? Is there a tracking log of all these changes?

If there are changes in IDs and such, is there a table showing old and new IDs side by side so that adjustments to skins can be made ... no need then for redundant discovery by every skin dev each version update when just a simple search and replace can fix things.
