When you install the drivers for the usb receiver, what is the name in device manager?
You might want to try the following
MP Config -> Remotes -> Enable MCE remote control
Save & Close
Run mediaportal, report which if any buttons work
MP Config -> Remotes Disable MCE remote control, enable HID Device
Save & Close
Run mediaportal, report which if any buttons work

Have you got any software with the remote, when you have it installed, what is it called in device manager?
Otherwise you need a program that will translate your remote buttons into key strokes.
However, I'd just buy a new remote, it's so old your gonna always have problems probably.
