Is anyone rewriting the nowplaying music module?

Hi I remember hearing that someone is rewriting this module, possibly the core, or just redoing it as a plugin. Does anyone know any details or who is doing it?

MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback.
