I use Kodi on a Raspberry Pi for playback, with MP running "headless". For playback I find it does just what I'm after, but scheduling is not so good, and MPExtended did just what I wanted on MP1...

I had a truly epic fight with the firewall and all my physical and virtual network interfaces 
, but I finally managed to put a client on my laptop and actually connect it to the server part on my HTPC. Playing and scheduling etc... works just as on the HTPC.
I also investigated trying the same on my android eReader device, but MPextended is only for MP1, and the aMPdroid app (= .apk file) is only on Google Playstore which I cannot (and wil not) get an account for. MPTvScheduler is also there, but you need (again) MPextended.
There is an attempt at creating a MP2Extended for MP2 - search the forum - and maybe you are lucky you can connect the apps to it, but I won't keep my hopes up.
A last possible workaround, would be to use VNC (I do it on the server), and a skin or plugin for touch screens that I found somewhere. I have androidVNC on my eReader and I think with a touchscreen-addon I could actually fully control the HTPC without turning on the TV or booting up a laptop. So that might work for you.

I wasn't using MPExtended on the Pi, I was using that from "anything with a web browser", granted only for scheduling, but that's all I used it for, for which it worked very well.
Not sure why you are suggesting using VNC, unless it is to install the full version of MP on my "TV Server" ?

Yes, I think you will have to install the full version on your server (or put the client only on the Pi???) so you can have acess to the EPG and schedule recordings I am afraid. I use VNC also sometimes for scheduling when I am at work, and that is from a computer.
For something less than a full computer (=android device with touch screen etc...) I think VNC and this:

would work better, but i haven't tried it.
