Ok. All things you mentioned you want is working perfectly with the SAF codec pack from Hoborg. This package uses MPC-HC decoder as mentioned here.
This is a lean solution which is easilly uninstallable and does not leave any mess or merrit problems. Also it is possible to use DXVA (GPU hardware accelerated video, so no CPU is used)... Only thing is that subtitles still result in software rendering. This is the case with ALL decoders at the moment.
I strongly suggest you give the SAF package a try before you pollute your system with an all in one solution... If your not happy with it, you can just get rid of it by installing it again.
ffdshow is also possible ofcourse. This has a lot more options to tinker with and also (the down side of this) possibilities to make errors.
(just to tease: In the near future it IS going to be possible in MP to have DXVA + subtitles. )
Apparently Windows hasn't had the codecs to read DVD since about Windows 8 or 10. I've been searching for a DVD playback codec but it requires another player. Is there a way for MP2 to read DVDs?

O Frabjous Joy!
That seems to have done the trick.
Thank you so much for your help and advice, CyberSimian. I hadn't thought of deleting the various folders, but I'll bear that in mind for any future disasters. Now I can record King & Conqueror on Sunday!
Cheers
Ralph
