In the coverflow view for Moving pictures, there is a background overlay on top of the movie background. Is there a way to remove this (or set its transparency to 0)?

You would need to modify the skin files for your skin. For titan this will be somewhere in C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\skin\Titan\movingpictures.background.xml or movingpictures.facade.xml or just movingpictures.xml

When I import new films using Moving Pictures, it takes an incredibly long time for the information to be found and downloaded...

I have just done a clean install of v1.36.
Current setup
Media Portal 1.36
Titan skin (only classic home)
TV Series 4.5.1.737...
You could use a different player that handles HDR content but thats more hassle then installing MadVR
