I use MySQL for my installation, just because I like it better. It requires (imho) less system resources, and is much easier to install/maintain.
    But I guess it's a matter of a preference.

MySQL is much better in this situation. MySQL is smaller, more robust. SQL Server is a memory hog.

MySQL is also free; SQL Server is an added cost to your htpc that you can do without.

I agree. MySQL is a better the product.

Less resources and Open Source which is a must for me.
It does not depend on other M$ stuff installed, so is independent of windows errors and weirdness

Is MS SQL better supported, because TV server was developed using this DB software and then later on came MySQL. So is MySQL going to work as good as MS SQL? Somebody should do some testing to see which one is the best.

The TV server 3 manual recommends that if you're using MS SQL then use the Express edition which is free, it also details how to limit the memory used by SQL instance.

I have it running on my HTPC without issue, it doesn't hog memory. I use SQL regularly hence why I use MS SQL on my HTPC.

The speed of running SQL queries is more likely to be influenced my the database schema, indexes & MP code rather than the DB engine.

So I think the answer to your original question is - whatever suits you best - MP works with both with similar performance.

with this post you proofen that you do not know anything about Microsoft SQL express (which is obviously free=doesnt cost anything)

    sorry, also wrong.....
every application you install on WindowsXP depends on "other M$ Stuff" as you call it ;)

    back on topic:

    MySQL or MS SQLServer ?
    Good question ;)

Both are free, both are very reliable, both are grown-up applications.

so there is no "use this SQL Server or you are doomed" answer ;)

some "hate" Microsoft SQL Express just because it is from Microsoft
some "hate" it because it is not open source
some "hate" it because they had bad experiences with it (same the other way around for MySQL)

The major amount of the Team Members is using Microsoft SQL express (including me), and we are happy with it.

So the question is not which is better (because both are great), the question is which one you "like" more. :)

For me, a clean install of 1.34 x64 TV server only on a fresh Windows 11 Pro device failed because the installation of MySQL in the background never completed, hence no database to connect to. On the assumption you are using an OTA/Cable or Sat tuner then no internet connection is required for live TV recordings. BUT only if you already have Media Portal fully installed and functional. For all practical purposes you will need an internet connection to get Media Portal properly installed on a PC! Yes.
