Well a lot of the startup tasks have been optimized in 0.7 so launching should be snappier. How many movies are in your collection though? It shouldn't be taking more than a couple of seconds. Maybe for larger collections it's slowing down more than we thought.

Its not a small collection, but not that big considering some I've seen mentioned, about 600 titles I guess.

Well I will look at doing a few more optimizations for 0.7 and we will see how long things take then.

Would moving it to GUI load not be appropriate?

::thinking:: It would be difficult to decide when it would stop I guess. As if it was left running somehow we'd end up with the database corruptions from .5.5?? Maybe when playing a movie... as they generally go for long enough to mask it all. I dunno..

Maybe its best if everyone just ignored this post.

Maybe it would be easier to just not post this post.

But then surely something special would be lost forever.

And im still writing cos this project management class is kinda boring today.

How many of you are familiar with the Project Management Body of Knowledge? (<<==rhetorical, not trying to hijack thread)

It's done on launch of MediaPortal because the startup tasks, among other things, maintain the integrity of the database, and the import runs in the background when you have MediaPortal up, even if you are not in the plug-in itself. So it's important to verify and clean the database on launch before the importer starts. Delaying the start of the importer and sticking this stuff in a seperate thread when launching the MP GUI would probably be a fine solution. i just want to look a little more into it, no promises on the implementation. This was already something I was going to look at before 0.7 so it's still all a part of the plan. ;)

Another idea for file matching would be to use the fingerprint, as used in the MediaFairy plugin for Meedios - MeediOS :: View topic - [Official Thread] MediaFairy v0.4.2 Alpha.

I don't know how extensive the fingerprint db is or if this is a good substitute for name matching, since that works well for many movies, but it will eliminate incorrect matches and have no false +ve's.

Yeah this method has come to my attention earlier and we are serieusly considering to implement this.. but i expect it somewhere after 0.7 is released.

God, I hope not. That method uploads your movie collection information to a server somewhere under that person's control. I don't think I really want that sort of comprehensive information about what movies I have located "out there" waiting for the feds to jump on it.

If this gets implemented, please make it optional!

I don't think your collection details are uploaded. The way I understand it is a hash of your movie is calculated locally and this is then compared against a database online, if it matches you have that movie. Now this could be a problem if the osdb server is logging the ip of each request. But that's no different than themoviedb or thetvdb also logging your ip.

Is there a way to download daily builds? And what is the expected release date for 0.7? I can't wait to try it out :)

MrCrispy is right.. the initial implementation would be that of just another data provider which happens to lookup movies using a calculated hash - indeed no different than looking up information from another provider.
This lookup will be optional, and probably enabled by default.

On the other hand it's also possible to upload a hash to confirm that it is a specific movie so other users can match the same file to the correct movie. This feature, as it allows you to give back to the community, will also be considered but not turned on by default. OSdB can also provide you with subtitles and because of the hash it knows exactly which version of the movie you have to serve you the correct one.

Overall i don't see any real privacy issues if you already are ok with getting information from other data providers.

We don't have daily builds but we do have an open repository over at google code and a very clear developer document you can use to do your own build. Keep in mind that these builds are not supported unless you have been given one to test specific issues on ;)

I am not sure what version is shipping with the StreamedMP skin. I would always suggest installing an official version from the project website. Its very easy to install. You basically unzip the archive, and copy the movingpictures.dll to your c:\program files\team media portal\media ports\plugins\windows directory.
