Your observation is correct mate. Last time this happened the fires of hell invaded all shopping centers... this time I seem to be the only one in need - which is quite uncomfortable at best. maybe setting loglevel to debug might pinpoint the difference between normal and stuck?
Preferable with as much disabled as possible
also try to see if anything is happening during stuck for the mediaportal process(resource monitor, disk activity, cpu usage, anything)
maybe other programs competing for resouces?

Since over a year my MP sometimes stucks while showing the welcome screen. It started once a week now it happens every second time...
I don't know about MP2 but as you said you tried MP1 too, how is the MP music config ?
MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback.
If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo.
