vlc keeps crashing now

could it be because i installed the 64 bit version?

No.

Try to re-encode the video/audio but it will use lot of cpu time.

14. video codec tab: video, uncheck keep original..., select an encoder
15. audio codec tab: audio, uncheck keep original..., select an encoder

thanks for your reply im just viewing the feed in the browser within media portal as and when needed
