I just finished quick test of Catalyst 8.12 (XP) and it looks like there is HW deinterlacing broken for MPEG2 (live SD TV, DVD playback,...)
Goes back to 8.5 and all is working just fine.

Yeah just reinstalled my HTPC - fresh Vista x64 install with Catalyst 8.12 and SAF - but I don't really seem to have anything working as it should. As said no HW deinterlacing for MPEG2 but I'm able to live with that. However, when playing back a HD-movie (any .mkv that will play..) I don't get DVXA either - CPU is @ 60% or so, doesn't sound like DVXA is working. Also, I still have the issue not being able to play the MKV-files with an AC3-audiostream (see earlier post). So at the moment most things aren't working. Also getting terrible interlacing even with deïnterlacing set to best.

Just quick question - why Vista and why 64?

Haha I'm really laughing at my own stupidity. I was installing the new OS around 5AM in the morning and I guess I wasn't thinking that straight and installed 64-bit version. Probably because I'm running 64 bit on my personal PC and just installed 64-bit Vista on a new laptop the day before. So I just 'naturally' chose 64-bit installation for the HTPC too. Not really smart, looking at stability etc. So definitely gonna do a new install right away.

Why Vista? All systems (except one) are Vista in our household and we're using networkshares a lot, an area in which Vista is much easier to use then XP. Therefore: Vista. Also because I really couldn't get SPDIF-output to work correct at XP, got tired of trying.

Remember, to get DXVA working under Vista, you need to enable EVR in MP and Aero in Vista.

Hoborg, is HW deinterlacing important for mpeg2 and DVD? I guess I assumed that wasn't necessary on todays pc's. If it is important I'll definately be rolling back my drivers. not sure if the newer drivers benefit anything anyways, besides games.

Well, it is all about the picture quality. Software realtime deinterlacing newer have same quality as hardware one. So if you prefer quality - then yes, it is very important.

Hi I followed your instructions, however, in the version of PowerDVD I downloaded (following your link) there is not the file in the data1.cab as you describe.

Why max shared memory? How much is that ?

Is there allready a solution for DXVA + subtitles ?

Maximum shared memory completely depends on the onboard graphic chip you're using. But according to the pictures at the URL in your signature ( ) you're using the Gigabyte 780G-board. Maximum shared memory is 512 megabytes. Why? Well, if yo're using DXVA it means that your onboard graphics card will do the decoding rather than your processor. And well, the more memory that's available to that onboard graphics card, the better, right? More memory available for the decoding means better decoding.. or well, that's what one could conclude from Hoborg's advise. I myself am not sure about that, because I doubt if you will really see any difference between 256 or 512 megabyte of video memory. It also depends on how much memory you have available in your system. If you have 1 gigabyte of RAM it won't be a good idea to give half of that to your IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor), but if you have 4 gigabyte.. why not.



I myself gave up on using the full SAF-package by the way. No offence intended, it's a great package but it doesn't seem to like my setup: 780G, Vista 32-bit, clean install with only Haali and SAF > wouldn't play half the MKV's. Also I can't use MPC-HC for HD LiveTV which is a problem for me (using HD LiveTV), so I'd need another HD-codec anyway. Actually I'm also having a problem with PDVD8 HD-codec so I'm using CoreAVC for HD at the moment. Not that great, but it's a HTPC for in the living room and I took it away for a few days to convert to Mediaportal-1.0 Final and it needs to be up and running again in a day, so I'll try it again in a few months..
