Whatisk:
I came to that conclusion since I did an extensive search on google using any combination of: video, judder, micro stutter, HTPC, SPDIF, DTS, MKV, MediaPortal, Mediacenter, Reclock, Refresh rate, NTSC.... and maybe a few others.

My final conclusion is so far that the judder/"speed up" occurs on NTSC-film/24fps (and maybe PAL/25fps) using SPDIF pass through with DTS. Apparently some of the websites I came across mentioned a bug in DirectSound, which has the unfortunate side-effect that DirectX is not capable of resampling the DTS audio equivalent to the "reverse 3:2" (from 24fps to 30fps to match 60Hz display).... or something like that.... but the result is that my sound goes perfectly, however my video tries to catch up every 20 secs or so (haven't counted seconds though)..... And no, it is NOT my system (I will just update my system specs now, so you can see it).

If you are able to, then please try to use WaveOut as your output. However, you will probably get A LOT of stutter and choppy sound and slooooow just like I got.

I haven't tried Reclock yet, however they mention potential problems using SPDIF. It is however 50-50 out there it seems.

My problems started after a switched from analogue mini-jacks to SPDIF pass through.

BTW.... whatisk.... I would recommend upgrading MP from 0.2.3.0 and maybe in general update your system specs in here ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. Every MKV I tested that had the judder was 24FPS with DTS. And yes, I get the same as you, perfect sound but the video speeds up for a split second at regular intervals.

I will give WaveOut a go and report back. I have been looking at Reclock also and gave it a quick try last night. I had no luck at all with it though :( I think it's because I'm running dual monitors on my setup (well, output to the Plasma and also to a 15" LCD monitor in extended desktop). After loading Reclock, videos wouldn't play at all and MediaPortal appeared to load but not show up the the primary monitor (TV). Looks like I have some reading to do (or perhaps just disconnect the secondary monitor and see how it goes then...)

As to the system specs, they haven't changed (well, except I'm no longer using Purevideo - FFDShow instead). I'm looking at upgrading to MP1.0 probably on the weekend. I currently have 0.2.3.0 running just right - well except for this MKV with DTS judder issue, but an upgrade to MP doesn't sound as though it will fix it. When I upgrade I'll be starting with a fresh build and so might try K-Lite codec pack that others have said seems to fix it. I'm not too sure how it would as I believe it just contains what I have already along with perhaps a couple of other codecs. Though I generally try and avoid loading them if at all possible.

Okay, I did a clean build of the PC and installed MP 1.0.0.0.
I originally installed SAF as the only codecs, but the judder persisted.
I then uninstalled SAF and installed K-Lite codec pack V4.45 as as suggested in an earlier post.
Using FFDShow as the audio codec the judder still appeared. I then disabled DTS and AC3 in FFDShow and configured AC3Filter and set MP to use that instead.
After a quick test of a file, it appears to have fixed the judder issue with MKVs with DTS.
I will do some more testing of other files and see how they go.

Initially found that for some reason only my MKVs would play - no AVIs...
Ran the Codec Tweak Tool (installed as part of K-Lite) and reset things back to default. Then reconfigured FFDShow and AC3Filter and all now plays okay.

I'll report back once I've tested more files to see if the judder has in fact gone.

Remarkable...I just stumbled across this thread because I was trying to figure out why my blu ray 24fps .m2ts rip of WALL-E with DTS (thru SPDIF) on a 60Hz display has a regular video speed up every few seconds! When I played the same file on my regular workstation (which has an X-Fi sound card with DTS decoding and no SPDIF out) there were no stutters. That had me scratching my head but it seems clear that Maedhros nailed it and 60hz+24fps+DTS+SPDIF is a witch's brew for video stutters. H264 might have something to do with it because I don't recall Predator blu ray Mpeg2+DTS having the same issue. Anyway, I have an AC3 track on WALL-E so I'll give that a spin tonight to verify. Since this thread died out just curious if anyone found a definitive fix?

I haven't. But, I've also noticed that after some time, maybe 10-15 min...the stuttering usually stops. haha. Ugh.

I can verify that playing the AC3 track on WALL-E eliminates the stutters. Also, playing the blu ray rip of Predator with mpeg2 and DTS has the same speed up stutter so it isn't just H264.

Edit: And it appears that using AC3filter (was using Nvidia audio filter) eliminates the stutters with DTS.

Using AC3 filter as the audio decoder in MP fixes this problem for me. Make sure to verify that it is actually being used in graphedit because I have had some issues with the MPA filter taking over even when its not set.

Had exactly the same problem. I've found that using AC3Filter for DTS files works perfectly, and still outputs in DTS. Alternatively, ffdshow re-encoding to AC3 (you may have to resample to get it to work) does the trick too.

That's with Vista x64, Core i7 920, 1gb Radeon 4870 and Gigabyte EX58-DS4 mobo.

How do you make sure that MP does only use AC3Filter for DTS-files? :-P

Well.... for those who are a bit interested in how to set this up easily, just download the AC3Filter and install.
My current configuration is:
Haali Splitter
FFDShow
CoreAVC
AC3Filter

in AC3Filter it is possible to set the filter to only process DTS streams. In the System tab under "Use AC3Filter for" simply uncheck everything except DTS (unless you want to use AC3Filter for other stuff too).

In MP Configuration go to the Videos section under the Video Post Processing and add the AC3Filter to the list and activate it (you may do the configuration of the filter from this section too if you didn't already configure it).

That's it.... I just tested it with a MKV + h.264 + DTS file over SPDIF and no judder or stutter or anything. This solution actually seems to do the trick.

One question for the people though: Is AC3Filter better than MPA? I mean, should I instead of using AC3Filter only for DTS use it for everything? Does anyone have experience with this?

same thing here. MPA + DTS out spdif just doesn't work. I unregister MPA manually and install/configure AC3filter and all problems go away!
