Depends on which codec you are using I guess.
I am using ffdshow. And I have created two different registry files to change the settings of ffdshow.
I am running either
regedit /s "ffdshowAC3 SPDIF.reg" - which adds the reg entries for ffdshow to passthrough ac3 to spdif
regedit /s "ffdshowAC3 decode.reg" - which adds the reg entries for ffdshow to decode ac3

If you intented to just "mute" output - try "m" (you have to set the volume control to "Wave" for that).

Strange. Mute button for SPDIF works fine here. I think I am using master volume control (never touched volume control after install of MP). (Well - fine is not correct. Sometimes system is "double muted" so I have to click mute repeatedly or enter XP volume control to fix it). HTPC is currently being used by 3 year old daughter, so I'll have to check later. Will try Wave as well.

EDIT: Forget the above. Was using wave. Damn - hope I found the "double mute" solution.

EDIT2: Using master works as well using TV music etc. haven't tried DD material - probably wont.

Also found what was causing the "double mute":

    When wave is used:
    1. When using mute in MP - both master AND wave is muted when MP is focused
    2. If MP is not focused, then ONLY master is muted

Now imagine that you have done 2. When you press mute master is no longer muted, but wave is. Press it again, and master is muted, but not wave --> no sound ever.

    This could be fixed by:
Making the mute ONLY mute wave - not master. This is also easier on the ears, as muting master causes a unpleasant sound.
Setting the mute to master only?

I'd also like to add that mute function for SPDIF in Windows sound panel works fine.

I don't think so, because MP has no way of knowing at which timestamp the external player stopped playback. Best way to achieve this would be to use an auto-resume feature in your external player itself. (MPC-HC can do that, I don't know about VLC)

It may seem strange, but the open-source license allows anyone to sell physical CDs or DVDs to customers, provided that, for example, the source code is made available upon request and additional value is provided, such as an installation manual. Both of these are mentioned in the product description, so it appears to be legitimate...

Got a reply from SD ... "Looks like your last successful download was on 5/23. On 5/24 for some reason we received 194 connections between 10:54 and 11:05 triggering a denial of service attack ban. The logs show it was lifted on 5/25, but I still see the entry in iptables. I reset fail2ban and hopefully you're working again." Weird...
