Hi Dreadfury,

I tried turning off the 100Hz motion plus and the problem appeared to get worse, so I set that back.

Any thoughts on the De-interlacing mode setting?

If the <Shift>-1 statistics are showing 50 fps and a very small number of dropped frames, do you think it's related to the TV itself? I have also been thinking of installing SAF (stand alone filter)

Any other thoughts?

Cheers

Graham

try playing a video in another movie player and see how it looks on your tv.
let's start there.

if it looks good, then we can assume the tv is not the problem.

Hi Dreadfury,

Played a DVD through the Media Centre and normal DVD and it seemed to play OK without trailing images. I'm therefore thinking it must be isolated to recordings. I'm now wondering if it's the TV Tuner Card or perhaps the signal - I have a VHF and UHF combined, boosted and then split into 4 outlets. The VHF reception is not good, but recordings are on the UHF aerial - high definition.

Thoughts??

Regards

Graham

hey gperkinson,

try making a recording and play the file outside of mp, like in vlc or windows media player.
then we can see if it is MP playback issues, or if it is tv card issues.

if the recordings look the same in another media player, then we know it is related to the tv card and can go from there.
if the recording looks good, then we know that it is a mp player problem, and can go that direction.

good luck!

Hi Dreadfury,

Good thinking!!

OK, didn't manage to play through VLC Player (kept crashing with a ts file) but got it playing in Windows Media Player. It seemed to have the same issue, so it must be in the recording. Interesting though that the Shift+! stats looked OK though? Thoughts?

I'm thinking about disconnecting the VHF aerial from the combination box and also removing the 4 way splitter, so I have a direct feed from the UHF aerial - thoughts?

I guess the only thing left would then be codecs and TV Card - correct?

Thanks for your help.

Hi All,

Another observation.

I notice that in Task Manager sqlservr.exe is burning up a lot of memory (845K out of 4GB) with physical memory running at 75%. It come up as "SQL Server Windows NT". I did some searches and understand that you can set a max limit on how much memory SQL utilises (recommended 126K according to Paranoid Delusion) If I reboot my machine it goes back to 41K and gradually increases.

I looked for the max setting as per the Wiki but could not find it.

I currently have loaded onto my machine:

MySQL Server 5.1
SQLServer 2005 and notice SQLExpress V 9.2.3042.00 in the properties

First question - should I have 2 SQL Servers running?

Second question - sounds like I have the wrong versions?

When I installed MP V 1.0.2.0 I uninstalled everything including the TV Server, however I noticed I was not asked for a username and password for the SQL Server - usually comes up as MySQL.

In relation to the "trailing images", these are reduced after reboot, so I'm wondering if the reduction in memory usage is helping with the issue?

Any thoughts on the above anyone around my SQL Setup?

Regards

Graham

.... bit of an update .... have since read the manual properly and discovered I needed to load more SQL software in order to get the max limit option for memory which I have now installed - will see how it goes from there.

I'm also going to disconnect the VHF aerial from the combination booster box so I'm just left with the UHF aerial and also bypass the 4 way splitter to see if that helps with the trailing images issue. If that doesn't work, I think I might then investigate another graphic card which will give me straight HDMI out so I don't have to transfer the sound separately - this is giving me slight delayed audio as I have to transfer it via the sound card. It's been 2 years since I bought the machine, so I'm sure they have come a long way since then.

Hi Graham, sorry for missing your earlier posts.

For one thing, 845k is nothing, especially from 4GB, less that 1/4000.

MySQL and MSSQL are two different things, you may need both depending on what programs you are using.
MP can use either, but I am not sure which one you have it configured to use. (The Default installed and setup by the MP installer is MySQL)

Your databases honestly should have absolutely nothing to do with your video quality.

It sounds like the quality of you TV cards is the issue.
Do they use hardware encoders or software encoders?

Buying a new video card will do nothing if the raw video being created by your tv cards is bad quality.

First, check your signal quality, do everything you can to give it a clean line and try to see the quality.
If the quality doesn't improve, no matter what you do to your signal input, then your problem is probably sub-par tv card(s).

Check reviews and feedback online about your tv card model(s) and see if others complain about the same poor quality.

does the quality of viewing and records look the exact same no matter what tuner you use?
have you tried playing a recording on a completely different PC?

You can also try playing with the de-interlacing settings, they can sometimes cause trailing or weird hatch-lines.

Hi Dreadfury,

Regarding SQL Server and memory - this was recommended in the manual, but take your point about how it relates to my tearing issue. On a show last night where there was lots of movement the tearing was pretty bad since setting the max limit, so I increased it to 512MB to see if it makes a difference - I'm not expecting it to.

Anyhow, I also had time last night to try and plug the earial directly into the computer i.e. bypass the 4 way splitter to see what happens - interesting that the computer could not pickup a signal at all? The signal was still boosted with the VHF / UHF combination box outside (I need VHF for the VHF CRT TV in the kitchen) but no signal? Is it possible that I have tuned in somehow specifically with the 4 way splitter or something? I didn't have time to re-tune and come to think of it I have not re-tuned the channels since I started using MP and gone through all the upgrades.

A good test also would have been to look at the picture directly on the TV from the aerial, but my TV does not have a Freeview tuner in it.

I also have another UHF aerial lying around which I may hook directly into the computer to test. Also, on the VHF / UHF booster there are low / high settings for each type of signal which might be worth a look.

Long and short, I definately need to understand if this tearing has been the aerial all along which I'm thinking is a real possability given the good Shift +! statistics.

Cheers

Graham

Hi Dreadfury,

OK, had a concentrated effort on this issue on Sunday.

I tried disconnecting the VHF aerial from the combination box and changing the gain on the booster for VHF and UHF between 26DB and 36DB and it didn't seem to make any difference. I also found a "separate" and "combo" setting which I changed to "separate" - unsure if this does anything. I never got around to re-tuning the TV Card directly from the aerial.

I then focused on the Catalyst Control Centre settings and upgraded to the latest version. Since then I feel the tearing has reduced. I have since found the link below on the internet around VSYNC and Triple Buffering which I'm going to try tonight. I have had a bit of pixalisation with the new ATI Driver, but it appears to be settling down - perhaps the machine needs to "re-balance" itself? If I timeshift back the pixalisation seems to disappear and correct itself.

how do i turn vertical sync on on ATI drivers 5-11 - Guru3D.com Forums

https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/codecs-external-players-55/calling-all-ac3filter-users-55622/

I also found a "lip sync" setting in AC3Filter which can be set to advance audio which appears to have done the business

Any thoughts on the above appreciated.

Graham
