Not sure why they would be black but there was a change made a while back and it may not be included in your cache. Try clearing the cache by deleting the files in this folder: C:\ProgramData\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\Cache
If that's not the issue and you don't want genre coloring you could try these settings, check attached picture.
