I remember something in the past about it being hard to find or pay for TV Guide data for US customers. Is there a link to explain if this has gotten easier? and maybe a free source of guide data?

You will see that there are a couple of free options. Honestly though: you get what you pay for sometimes... and this is one of those times. Free is not always better.
