I am thinking about making the swtich to Vista 64 bit from XP. I have seen other people post so I believe I can safely assume MP functions just fine.

Anythings to look out for? Encoders Compatibility? Advice?

    Thanks

    Hi,
MP works good with Vista x64, codecs used for MP it's the same as in x86(yeah, a x86 programs uses x86 codecs & not x64 codecs), only thing with vista it's to turn off UAC ;)

    Regards

I've just recently switched from XP to Vista x64, everything works fine except for my Hauppage PVR 150 which doesn't like 4gig+ of ram in 64bit Vista but that's a driver issue nothing to do with MP.

(...)only thing with vista it's to turn off UAC ;)
    That's pure nonsense.

I think he meant Vista in general and not MP-specific with that note..... Me too.... UAC sux BIG TIME!! ..... MS could just as well have called that feature "False User Security" .... It gives people the habbit of just pushing an OK button when it pops up, and in general it is the worst implementation of security I have seen since it was possible to go around a CD's copy-protection by holding the shift-button (to avoid autostart)... lol.

    On topic:
You can easily run MP from Vista x64.... I am running it from Server 2008 x64, which is basically a Vista x64 + SP1, so no need to worry.... all my codecs are working great. I use CoreAVC + Haali Splitter + ffdshow.... Works like a charm :)

I am still on the issue of making a PVR-500 MCE working on Server 2008. I would like to hear if you had your PVR-150 working 100% on Vista, wince it is basically the same hardware x2 :)

I solved the PVR-150 issue by removing a stick of ram to go down to 3gig, works perfectly now, I know I've lost a gig (which was part of the reason for going 64bit in the first place!), but using XP there was only 3.25gig addressable anyway, so not much difference. The other thing is I've also lost dual channel mode but that doesn't seem to have affected performance that much, I'm hoping Hauppage will eventually fix the driver issue and I'll be able to put the other stick back in.

I was talking Vista specific too, not MP related. Both of you are wrong, but I'm not going into details, I'm sick of that discussion through all the internet and there's no point in doing it one more time.

Saying things like that is just asking for trouble, whether you're right or wrong is irrelevant, it's just an opinion which we're all entitled to and should be respected.

In my opinion the UAC implementation in Vista is too intrusive to be worthwhile, hence I've disabled it, on my MacBook pro the UAC implementaion is not intrusive and works just fine.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I agree with you on that one. But saying stuff like:

    "UAC sux BIG TIME!!"

    or

"(...)only thing with vista it's to turn off UAC"

    Are not opinions...

In the other hand, you were the only one that expressed your opinion about UAC correctly, by saying it was too intrusive (still, UAC can be left turned on without intruding, search for TweakUAC) where everyone else just said, "uac is bad beacuse it is", that's not an opinion. What bothers me is that people are not informed (about TweakUAC for instance) and encourage everyone else to turn UAC off (just because some reason that themselves don't understand), when you simply shouldn't.

No matter how intrusive you think UAC is, it shouldn't be turned off. But I agree with you, it's very intrusive, it's annoying, but that's no reason to turn it off and compromise the whole system. Cause yes, your system is fully exposed by turning UAC off. That's why I use TweakUAC on my system and UAC is turned on without bothering me. Really, search for it.

Nazgulled..... Have you ever bothered to look into things before playing Einstein? .... And yes, excuse my tone, however you already managed to turn this post into a flamewar and I am just here to greet you to the world of computer science. I am a Software Engineer, I am very well aware of what is going on at Microsoft.... Although your little UAC-trick hardens Internet Explorer and such, it is still in a sense false security.... UAC is simply put implemented the wrong way. I am not saying I have a better one up my sleeve, but I know a design-flaw when I see one.... It is just like their infamous SuperFetch service that tries to predict the future and load crap into my memory.... no thanks! .... It kills your laptop and your harddrive, and I for one just HATE the seeking noise..... again.... flawed by design.

Your little TweakUAC only turns off that annoying popup.... But do really think that you are safe? .... If I had the time, I could sit down and write a piece of code that would request an administrator token from the UAC, which I would get now since I don't need your approval by clicking the mouse.... Even if I needed it UAC pops up on the same pixels everytime, get the drift? ;)

UAC is nothing but encouraging people to trust Microsoft's ability to secure their system, which they have done a less than adequate job of doing.... Who ever got the idea that XP should be completely open unless told otherwise? An MS guy, hurrah..... Only after tons and tons of admins shouting to clean up their mess they released XP SP2 to have everything closed unless told otherwise. The same guys are messing with UAC and Superfetch to mention a couple of misbreeds at MS HQ.

Maybe take a bit of time and read through articles like: User Account Control Step-by-Step Guide
The following article also uses the phrase of "leaving security intact".... woooow.... noooot:
    http://www.informationweek.com/blog...l;jsessionid=ENOLH0AKQ5HA4QSNDLPSKHSCJUNN2JVN

Your miracle application there just makes use of the "Admin Approval Mode"-setting, which keeps UAC on, but disables the popup.... But does that mean that as an Administrator user (the default in Windows) you can't install applications and disable the firewall and clear the registry and such? ... No, you can still do all of that.... The application just receives an automatic "Yes, sir" from UAC when it requests the Administrative security token, just as if you would have pushed "Ok" yourself.... There is a Windows API function where you in your application code can request that access and have administrative access to install drivers and root-hooks and such.... And once I have that "Yes, sir", you can kiss your UAC gooooooodbye ;-)

Hope this puts an end to the part about the Vista UAC and let's get on with what we do best..... I'll dig into some more code and maybe even refresh "The Old New Thing: Practical Development Throughout the Evolution of Windows" .... Read it... You may actually have a few laughs from it, if you are a bit windows-technical ;-) .... find it at: The Old New Thing: Practical Development Throughout the Evolution of Windows: Raymond Chen: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Ok, so perhaps a solution, but not the "right" solution. On the client, within media portal configuration, under TV settings, advanced options, I switched to UNC paths instead of the default RSS, and it's working very well. Sure I had to figure out the paths, but no big deal. Maybe helpful for someone in the future. Thanks for the...
