Either, if using MSSql, limit memory usage to say 128Mb as per the wiki.
When you are installing MediaPortal 1.0, it will let you choose between the two. It will actually install the one you pick for you. They are database providers and are used by the TV portion to store your channels/recordings/etc.

I was just tinkering with a few settings in the MediaPortal configuration and am happy to have found the cause of the problem.

FYI, you can also play with these settings: show TV Server Configuration shortcut => Right-click => Properties => Compatibility => Change High DPI settings
That way you don't have to change the whole scaling of Windows just for this particular application
