I would assume MCE's 5.1 capability depends lot of the used codecs. So the same issue could be facing on MP as well.

Take a look at this, media centre in windows 7 has a known bug where 5.1 audio is concerned, which causes playback problems and the fixes people suggest dont work for everyone or work for a few days then stop again.

MP allows you to choose the codecs you use. The control is in your hands.
