They are completely different and there are way too many pro's for mediaportal to list. I could list around 30 pro's at least. The cons are that it's more complicated to set up and costs more to make an HTPC vs buying an apple tv. Apart from complexity and cheaper cost, there is no other pro to apple tv.

The first contra for the apple TV
- no LiveTV support
- you can't play Movie/Music files directly
- you can't play all movie files
- no BluRay/DVD support
- and the feature list from kiwijunglist

As far as i know Apple TV its just a client for iTunes . So you just can get access to the Series/Movies/Music which are available in the iTunes Store.

apple tv can play network shares so it's not just itunes stuff.

personally, I think you should be comparing apple tv to stuff like wdtv live hd, roku player, popcorn hour etc.

I'd recommend WDTV live if you want a stand alone media player that can play all formats, play networked files and files of an external usb HD. http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330
