I'm in the land of Oz. My htpc's just crash by the thought of having to record Australian Idol. If I even try to schedule this it will go to auto self destruct.

While your on the topic of recording stuff in OZ.

WTF is this all about: http://www.theage.com.au/news/techn...you-own-an-ipod/2006/11/20/1163871308087.html

    I mean???!

"Australia will be the only country in the world that has strict liability offences for copyright,"

    That is very F*%&$@ up.

Meh, over 90% of the Australian population are criminals right now anyway thanks to our existing copyright laws. They just don't prosecute us, because if they did, basically the entire country is guilty because even things like ripping a CD to a computer/iPod, or a recording off a FTA using a VCR is illegal.

These reforms were basically instigated as a result of the AUSFTA (Australia-US Free Trade Agreement). They were essentially conditions imposed upon us on signing, so I guess we should be thankful we don't have the DMCA or any truly draconian legislation like that, although this is close.

IMO, the most significant positive thing about the new copyright legislation is that it prohibits (or permits circumvention of) region-seperating mechanisms, e.g. region-coding on DVD players.

the proposed laws are going to be the worst in the world. I've been following this on another forum and in relevant news articals.

Breaching copyright will be a criminal offence rather than a civil offense, even if you didn't know you were doing it.
These new laws aren't part of the Free Trade Agreement, they were originally designed to bring our already severe laws up to date, but they are being rushed through so fast that they fail miserably.

So far, as the law is proposed it will make iPods illeagal and leave Google and other search engines open for massive law suits.
Google has objected heavily to the laws and hinted that it will have to disable access for Australians if the laws are not changed. Cahcing websites will soon be a criminal offence.

They have also very clearly defined the rules for public performance. Playing any music where others can hear is only allowed if it is in your own house and only if the people there are immediate family or close friends. Parties will not be allowed anymore.
The scary thing with this is that it's a criminal offence, meaning no one has to make a complaint so if you get a mean policeman your neighbors noise complaint could become a jail sentence. Of course these are worst case scenarios, but they are still something to think about.

Our good old PM is so in bed with large corporations that he does whatever they want. Our Communications Minister recently was quoted saying that if the consumer groups say they are too hard and corporations want them tougher then they must be a good compromise. What a laugh.

These laws are being pushed through even though there is only a small number of parliamentary sitting days before the deadline and up to now tall the focus has been on the stem cell research and water trading legislation. No one has had any time to discuss much in parliament after the other subjects have recently finished.

I guess that was my rant. As you can guess I am pretty disillusioned about our government.

PS, it's been legal to circumvent region coding here for a long time, thanks to the ACCC. The laws don't affect that fact.

Oh, I stand corrected then for a few of my points. So the new legislation put that into our laws, instead of having to rely on precedence.

Wow, I didn't realise they were that bad. What if I have a song as my mobile ringtone and it rings in a shopping centre when a copper strolls past? Whoops, off for a ride in a divvy van :p

I'm sure the cops will love to spend their time filing criminal offences against everyone. Damn, we already don't have enough cops on the beat as it is.

This definitely paves the way for RIAA similar stuff...uh oh.

Ok, thanks much. I will look into the instructions above. For the moment, I turned off the "Automatic channel logo update" in Settings (which somehow I had missed, I think because it wasn't an option previously), and the deleted everything in the Flat-default folder and populated it with my own logos. Works, so far.
