    Hi all,
This is my first post here.
i also have had a lot of "fun" getting subtitles to work properly.
I use the klite codec pack for my codec needs, installed as playback only with vmr9 enabled. I leave the defaults for container management which currently seems to be basically haali for most containers.
When playing back videos that uses haali to split i find that it gets 2 copies of the subtitles displayed, due to both the haali splitter and direct vobsub. to fix this you just go into direct vobsub config, misc tab and check hide subtitles.
Then in MP setup tick show subtitles.

This seems to make media portal display the subs by default.

I use the microsoft MCE remote (euro version) and i bind the teletxt colour buttons for things like switch audio stream, switch subtitle stream and toggle subtitles.

The haali splitter can also load your preffered audio and subtitle tracks. id est. say it has eng and jpn for audio, eng and ger subtitles. You could have it outselect jpn for audio and eng for subtitles even if they are not the default choices for the file.

As a side note the haali splitter also handles chapters quite well.

I use these settings to primarily watch anime and it works great. Works perfectly for matroska, mp4, ogg, etc. for containers, with mp3, aac variants and ogg etc. for audio, with ssa, ass, sub, srt etc. for subtitles. Also works with nero digital AVC.

Any questions? Feel free to reply.

SVN Build 14587 not working with external subs

If you are using a nightly build, it looks like the method of enabling the DirectVobsub filter in movie post processing no longer works for AVI's with external subs.

I am seeing the problem whereby both DirectVobsub and DirectVobSub (auto loading) filters appear when you go back into the configuration after initially just configuring the auto loading filter. This was occurring in both the stable 0.2.2 release as well as the SVN build (14587). The difference was that it did not appear to affect the stable release at all. Subtitles would display, and could be turned on / off with L.

Under the SVN build, after initial configuration of the Vobsub filter, subtitles will display, but cannot be turned or turned off with L. However, if the config tool is re-entered, and the two Vobsub filters are "observed" and then config is exited, sub titles will not display at all.

hmm.... sorry to ask that, but I di read all the replies ( I know I´m lasy..)
I was reading the new topics and got on this one.
Implementing mkv and other container to show subtitles is not that hard ...
if I can do it, anyone can..) Changing audio and subtitles in containers with build-in features , too ( ogm. mkv...) external subs work, too.

But has someone figured a way to switch EXTERNAL subs on and off in mediaportal ?!
By using ffdshow I can get them to work, but I can't switch them on and off in mediaportal ....so its always on or always off?!

I'm using v0.2.2.0 non SVN, and I'm actually seeing this similar problem... I've found a workaround tho - the first time I enter MP config and add the directvobsub, click OK and save the changes, the external subs can be toggled and turned on and off with the yelllow MCE remote button. Then, if I subsequently enter MP config again to make any other changes and exit MP config, the sub no longer gets diaplyed.

Workaround - after making any final changes to MP config, I have to go back to movie post processing, dbl-click to remove directvobsub, click OK to exit config, re-enter MP config and add the subs back, and viola subs there again. I realised that the addition of directvobsub have to be the last thing you've got to to in MP config, otherwise the subs disappear. A kind of a pain but hey I don't go into MP config all the time. This works even if I restart MP and reboot the PC - as long as I don't enter MP config again and make any other changes it'll be OK.

The behavior on my two systems was different.

With the Stable 0.2.2 release, I could go in and out of config as many times as I like after initial configuration of the vobsub filter (and see that the two filters in fact were present), and subtitles would ALWAYS work, and could be turned on / off with key L. I got this to work on two different client machines, both with CCCP installed. Happy days.

As soon as I upgraded to the SVN (which fixed a lot of nastiness with IMDB updating, BTW), I have had to do the workaround of making sure I delete and re-add the filter each time I go into config, however, the subtitles are permanently on, and cannot be turned on / off with L. If I don't do the workaround, subtitles just don't display at all.

Again, this is with external subs. Maybe behaviour with MKV's with subs is different.

Using this guide the subs works with the remote :D

There is a little thing that I like to see: the forced subs should start automatically as on
    a DVD

I try to explain: I have a video file named zuccabubu.avi and its forced subs called
zuccabubu.forced.avi now I have to press the key on the remote to activate the subs...
    indeed they should always show!

There is a way to obtain this - that I retain - a very useful function?

I can confirm with mine on SVN, mkv with embedded subs can be turned on and off, but an avi with external can't turn them off.

I was having issues getting ass subtitles embedded in MKV's to work, and as a result of changing things, I noticed mine seem to work, without the directvobsub filters selected in the MP configuration. I just have:

    - directvobsub/vsfilter (or whatever its called) installed: set to load when needed; emedded and external
    - haali media splitter (for MKV's) with autoload vsfilter set to yes.

This now seems to work in both WMP10 & Mediaportal.

Note I tried loads of different versions of VSfilter before I got this working properly. I have no idea whether it was me, or something not installed/uninstalled properly. In the end I used the KLite codec pack, ignored uninstall advice; ticked deselect all in setup and just added VSFilter from that. Suddenly now it works properly??!!?? Well almost, just can't turn them off for external subs now. But at least for everything with subs, they now seem to start automatically.

Yes, I have come to the conclusion that converting the avi's and external subs to mkv's with mkvmerge is the best option. The conversion process is relatively painless. Making sure that you have vobsub installed and Haali set to auto load vsfilter (assumming you are using Halli for mkv splitting) seems to ensure the best success with subs. I've given up trying to get avi's with external subs working properly. I can get them to display, but just cannot work out how to turn them on or off.

However, even with mkv's, it is still a problem that MP cannot cycle between multiple sub tracks, and only toggles between on and off on the first track.

An alternative to my previous "fix" is to use ffdshow to handle subs. Check that ffdshow is your codec in movies section of configuration and enable subs.

Check that the subs part of ffdshow checks the same folder for subs and name those subs accordingly.

Then so you can switch, the subs on and off or for different languages, bind some buttons on your remote. I use the colored teletext buttons for these, one for next audio stream, aspect ratio selection, show subtitles and lastly next subtitle.

This system means that the subs are on by default and with one button press you can turn them off.

BTW the reason i wanted to use ffdshow was for the quality enhancements, which can be considerable on a crappy single pass xvid rip.

    how come?

I have lots of mkvs with lots of buildin subs 7 or more many times and i can cycle between them just fine by pressing my Yellow button on the MCE RC.

avi's suck compared to mkv. I wonder when rippers will start seeing that and start doing all their ripping and encoding with mkv container instead of avi.
