You pretty much got it, no, you don't need a self compiled MP version, although that sometimes helps when your debugging the display logic. Software wise you'll need VS 2005 (Express should work fine, although I haven't tried) and a SVN tool (tortoise).
Oh, you forgot one thing that you need: lot's of time ;-)
Once you've gotten your hands dirty I'll grant you commit access.
