I actually created a custom category that shows all the movies with a resume time > 0. There are ways to use fancy SQL queries to update the SQLite database, but I just open the movies in the list and I either answer 'no' on the resume and quickly press STOP key to remove them from the list, or I resume the movie to watch it, or quickly skip to the section/end I wanted to watch (also then also trigger a Trakt/Follw.it update)
I don't think so, because MP has no way of knowing at which timestamp the external player stopped playback.
Best way to achieve this would be to use an auto-resume feature in your external player itself. (MPC-HC can do that, I don't know about VLC)
