I run mine just as a MePo client and use it "as is", not connected to anything.
Hardware in surface pro is good enough to use as a full HTPC connected to a "big screen" and is able to run 1080p movies with no problem at all.
I cant really say anything about bitstream and things like that, I just have no idea about it...
If you compare the hardware in surface pro with other stuff people here on the forum use to run MePo and do all kinds of things with them I think you'll get a good idea of just how powerful the surface pro is and what you can do with it.
And oh yeah, i only use LAV filters.
