Will the new server have the ability to do placeshifting? That would be awsome.

Just a quick question from me, how does the server handle which client takes preferance etc. Say client 1 sets a program to record, what happens if client 2 wants to cancel that? Can it? If it does is there any notice to client 1?

I'm thinking about how it will handle a home environment, with multiple people trying to use one server. Obviously one will take preferance, but how is this handled? Is it possible to protect a recording depedning on which client scheduled it etc.?

Awesome news guys. I'm excited for MediaPortal! I saw the specs that you [infinityloop] have for your MP server machine. Speaking on behalf of us with a tight budget, what are some of the minimum specs you would recommend having for each of these three types of machines:

MP server (no client)
MP client (no server capabilities)
MP server+client (serving and running the client software)

I noticed you mentioned that it's only necessary to have a good video card on the client machine, which makes sense, but my question relates more towards how the client or server software take up system resources. I suspect that many people will keep the MP single-machine configuration.

Awsome work by all involved. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Just one question...

I notice in the diagrams that the Standalone installation mentions support of waking up the HTPC for scheduled recordings etc but the other diagrams do not mention that functionality for the server components. Does that mean that there will be nothing built in to allow the server to hibernate when nothing is happening. My thoughts were that the client might be able to send a magic packet to wake up the server if required.

Any thoughts?

Infinityloop, don't suppose you can share with us how much RAM you have in your machine, that you were using as the server?
Thanks

What sort of specs would be needed for a server machine serving 2 clients?
i can tell you the other way around.

i am using an Athlon64 3500+ as Server with
1x Nova-T
1x Skystar 2
1x floppy-dtv

With latest build:
If all 3 cards are recording at the same time the CPU load is below 20%.
If one client is connected its ~10%

But, other tasks are running on this server too. ftp, web, sql, ect.

A dedicated TV-server does not require a powerful CPU or gfx card. only a huge harddisk to store all your recordings ;)

It would be great if the new server was also a uPnP server.
This question is not off-topic. thats all info i can give away for the moment ;)

This "magic packed" would be called WOL (Wake On Lan)

Genreally speaking a server is running 24/7. Maybe such a "Wake On Lan" feature will be added in the future. but this is not planed at the moment.
there are much more importand other things on the ToDo list now. ;)

    About the SystemSpecs:

    Single-seat configuration:
If you can use MediaPortal 0.2.0.4 on your HTPC, the single-seat configuration will work too. without eating much more system resources :)

    Networkconfiguration:
    Server:
the Server Hardware depends on a few things:
    - do you want to use multiple TV-Cards?
    - do you want to use HDTV?
    - which other applications are running on the server?

    Client:
If you can use MediaPortal 0.2.0.4 on your HTPC, you will also be able to use it as Client in a networkconfiguration.

Detail system specs will follow as soon as we get close to the final version.
    Please be patient :)

i plan on using a athlon 2400 + 512mb RAM , 128mb ti4200 for my server, just as a dedicated file server for the clients and it will have no more than 3 tuners in it, reckon i should be right or should i be planning for a beefier server, got us all happy and excited now :)
