i plan on using a athlon 2400 + 512mb RAM , 128mb ti4200 for my server, just as a dedicated file server for the clients and it will have no more than 3 tuners in it, reckon i should be right or should i be planning for a beefier server, got us all happy and excited now :)
from my current point of view this should be more than enought for PAL :)
(but i am not able to test HDTV (dvb-s2) yet, so no clue what would happen then)

you can specify the recroding directory, yes.

but the MediaPortal TV-Server has to run on WindowsXP or 2003.

    This is probably off topic.....but..

It would be great if the new server was also a uPnP server.
This question is not off-topic. thats all info i can give away for the moment ;)
I am also very interested in Team-MediaPortal's current views on UPnP. That is; a UPnP-server built-in MediaPortal's TV-Server, and a UPnP-client built-into the MediaPortal Client, plus UPnP remote-control communication protocols in both as well, (as then MediaPortal TV-Server could be fully controlled by any UPnP-client that supports that, and the MediaPortal Client could control any UPnP-server that support it).

The whole UPnP support (Universal Plug and Play) discussion can be found here:

PS! This of probebely off-topic though; how is the MPEG-TS recording engine comming along?, (I long for MediaPortal to stop using DVR-MS)

[...]i am sorry, but i do not realy know wthat you mean
Probably about connecting the (eg) sVideo-in on your TV-card with the sVideo-out on your Nintendo/Xbox/anyuthing else and play on the console with the screenoutput as a external TV channel in mediaportal. I've seen some posts in the forums that a consistent lagging (which is of course no real problem when watching TV) tends to limit playability somewhat.

Yes, that's exactly the problem (sorry for my original poor explanation). It's mostly because of I have a few NTSC consoles but live in a PAL region (so no TV to play them on). I did try turning off timeshifting once, but I remember it didn't help a lot.

But I can definitely wait until the release of the new TV engine and test it then, so don't worry too much about this problem.

i have a question releated to the database engine.

Since the new TVDatabase Engine is going to run on MS SQL Server 2005 express edition what will happen with the other MP datbases?

    like the videodatabase, radiodatabase, TVSeriesDatabase.

Are those going to be kept with the current SQLite Database or are they going to be ported on the new SQL 2005 engine as well?

    Cheers

These are databases of MP and not of the new tv server.
The new tv server will not use the databases and have no relation with it.
However there are plans to migrate those database as well to SQL 2005

Note that although we recommend SQL 2005 express for the TvServer
its (in theory) possible to use any database (so also mysql)
However this is not tested yet.

Some one else asked if the new tvserver is going to support tv-server plugins.
These plugins could be things like
    - epg grabbers (xml tv)
    - controlling external receivers like setupboxes
    - re-compressing recordings to for example xvid
    etc etc.

The first version won't have plugin support, however this will be added soon after the release.
