with a p4 2.8 ghz and a geforce 7300GT 256MB
would I be better off with purevideo or powerdvd for hardware video support?

purevideo has not been supported by Nvidia for at least 18 months, PowerDVD Ultra seems to be the flavour if you want dxva (HW acceleration).

My understanding is that mkv is just a container format, so as long as you have some kind of codec installed that can read that format, then whatever the media itself is underneath is what is interpreted and played as video.

So if it's mpeg or h.264 underneath the mkv, then yes cyberlink can hardware accellerate. If it's xvid, or wmv, I doubt it.

4.5 is really old. I'm not sure 4.5.5 even is a version that actually existed. You should be able to install .NET Framework 4.8.0 on Windows 7 SP1

I don't know about MP2 but as you said you tried MP1 too, how is the MP music config ? MP(1) will only use LAV if you select "Internal DirectShow player" as music output, but then you lose gapless playback. If you you don't have multichannel music you can choose WASAPI as the output and set the number of speakers to stereo. I have...

I am running a Xubuntu machine as a server with all my movies and series on it, I run a VirtualBox VM with Windows 10 installed on the virtual machine and MP1 client installed on that. MP runs fine on the VM but I no longer have a tv tuner to test if passthrough is possible. I don't think it would work anyway.
