Hey Hoborg,

For the first time since ages I have a video that has some issues, I uploaded a sample for you here.
On my Windows 7 x64 machine I have constant noise, on my XP SP3 machine I get no sound whatsoever.
VLC and MPC-HC both work, mediaplayer does not (both machines). Have not tested it inside MP yet.
According to mpc-hc it uses AC3 for audio.

No problem here, regular AVI with xvid+AC-3 - by some reason, are you using passthrough?

Hmm weird then, I do not use passthrough.
I'll check another system and see what it does. It might be some issue with WMP 11/12 not sure. I'll be sure to check MP as well

Then there should be no problem at all. Maybe you have another AC3 filter installed in system? Try open in grapstudio and see what decoder is in use and if your sample work here.

This is the graph W7 creates, looks good to me;

I cannot (at least with W7) connect graphstudio to anything, it just does not list anything so checking what WMP does I can not do yet. I'll try it on the xp system

afaik I have no other AC3 filters installed.

Yes, graph is OK, if you hit play here, did you hear audio?

Yep sound plays in graphstudio, I guess the only thing that does not work is WMP :) Ah well, can live with taht, it's just the one file. Bit weird cause I play a lot of xvid files with ac3 codec without a problem in WMP.
It might be that there's a little corruption in the file or something that makes WMP choke on it.

Oh man, you are using WMP? That is totally crap software ... :)

lol, you know I agree with you on a programmer's perspective but not on a user's perspective.
WMP is the most user friendly, usable, organized interface compared to all other players out there, imo. Although it can be a tad slow with huge DBs (lots of media files in wmp)
Well don't be spending time on this, I'll fiddle myself a bit and see if I can get it going somehow.

No I'm 100% serious. I know a lot of people that agree with me.
Do you like the win95 feel of MPC HC then? I'd rather have a slick GUI if possible.
Besides that I have not seen any player that has a good support for both Audio and Video like WMP does (well sarcasm, good is maybe not the word, just support ;)). With that I mean full blown DB support, indexing of everything and a good search feature.
Yeah sure winamp can do both but video playback is a b*tch on that one.
MPC-HC is mainly intended for video.

There's just no alternative for what WMP offers imo. At least I have not seen it yet. iTunes comes close but is as bad as WMP on windows
