The sad thing with the Hauppauge remote program is that it does not handle long file names, hence the "progra~1" and so on.
Perhaps you should also write "mediap~1.exe" instead of "mediaportal.exe"?
My solution was to create a shortcut to Mediaportal.exe, call it "mp" and place it directly under "C:".

Best way to achieve this would be to use an auto-resume feature in your external player itself. (MPC-HC can do that, I don't know about VLC)
