Use WebEPG (http://mypage.bluewin.ch/webepg/), it is based on www.mydigiguide.com, www.bleb.org and xmltv.radiotimes.com for UK. And if you use a CVS version, you will have the setup integrated in the MP Wizard!

Your observation is correct mate. Last time this happened the fires of hell invaded all shopping centers... this time I seem to be the only one in need - which is quite uncomfortable at best. Thinking about this now, you probably also needed to delete the font cache files in the MP "Cache" folder. That would trigger MP to regenerate the font cache files the next time that the MP client starts. Sorry for forgetting to mention that.
